    Acadia National Park image
I really appreciate visiting Acadia National Park during august 2022. We went to visit the Park sleeping in Camden, about 1h 30 by car, but less expensive thank sleeping inside the Park itself. I like Cadillac Mountain despite the fact that there were a lot of fog at the pick and not very good visibility. We went also for a easy trip in Jordon Pond (a beautiful lake) in the South East of the park of about 3 miles/5 km, I suggest to do this tour also with children, it is really easy and safe. The park costs 30$ per day with private car and ti visit Cadillac I suggest to book online with anticipation, it is 6$ per day See more..

Lovely state park. Parking costs $7 pp (on the honor system, just put cash in the lockbox). Access to the rocky beach is a 2 minute walk. NOT appropriate for anyone with mobility issues. Be sure to park in the waterfront lot which is free, not in the small lot that has an arm across the entrance. The lighthouse is on a short breakwater to the left of the parking lot and you can walk right out to it. This is a good place for views of Casco Bay (boats, Fort Gorges) and Portland, including the Portland Observatory in the distance. To the right of the parking lot is a large outline of a ship which contains exhibits about the building of Liberty Ships in South Portland during WWII. See more..

Camden Harbor Park and Amphitheatre image
We try to catch local theater when on vacation and weren't disappointed. Happened to find Camden Shakespeare Festival's "As You Like It" playing at this cool amphitheater overlooking the harbor. Tickets were about $30 ea with taxes/fees. Bring a picnic and blanket or your own comfy chairs. They do provide some chairs. Actors come out from various directions. Very good talent, many are drama students from different universities. 15 min intermission for 2.5 hr play. Lovely spot, was shady while daylight. Parking looks tricky. Some spots in library lot and along road. We got lucky and found a spot on the street. Short walk into town. Watch out for 2 hr parking limit. Friends got ticket. See more..

Fort McClary State Historic Site image
My son was leaving for the Air Force and we wanted to have one last adventure, so we got in the car and decided to put Maine on our list of states we’ve been to. We had just moved to New Hampshire so honestly everything is new to us! Fort McClary is quite nice. We walked around and couldn’t get over how small it really was. The view is fantastic! We spent the last 10 years in Arizona so to see an are so “small” was a bit mind blowing. It would have been really cool to have gone into the building, but it wasn’t open (perhaps a Covid thing, not sure) We saw a short path to the left of the fort but didn’t take it. You can get to the water by climbing down a few rocks, my son just HAD to put his hand in to say he’s been to both oceans! If you want to make a memory, I’m going to say it’s worth it. The short drive is really beautiful as well. See more..

    Bradbury Mountain State Park image
A short but steep hike to the summit rewarded us with a fantastic view. From the summit, we took the Tote Road loop to the Northern Loop. There were lots of families with dogs and children on the latter as it's fairly flat and wide. The trails are well-marked, but the blaze colors don't match up with what is on the maps. Overall a great place to get some fresh air and enjoy the fall foliage! See more..
  20. 5.0 Eagle Lake Acadia National Park (145 reviews)
    - Very pretty lake and beaver pond nearby
Spent 2-3 hours Bodies of Water • National Parks
Eagle Lake Acadia National Park image
We arrived about 6:30pm on a weekday and had no trouble parking in the small lot near the north end of Eagle Lake. We walked the short trail toward the lake and saw wide gravel walking trails and directional signage but did not have time to check out these trails. We just walked down to the lake’s edge for a few photos. From the parking lot, walk east on the road a short distance to see the beaver pond. In the late afternoon light, it was very pretty and we saw two beaver lodges on opposite sides of the pond. See more..

    - A beautiful view, a comfortable stroll.
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Parks • Hiking Trails
    Penobscot River Walkway image
We happened upon the River Walk when we were looking for parking for a local restaurant in Brewer. We walked the entire length of the walkway, took about 30 minutes in all, but the scenery was very nice. Plenty of flowers blooming in the early September sun, the river was clean and the waterfowl were plentiful. We walked down some stone steps to the kayak launch and were greeted by no less than a dozen ducks, who are clearly used to people by now, and said hello before heading back up to traverse the rest of the path. You get to see across the Penobscot into the waterfront area of Bangor, as well as the "Children's Garden," the steeples of the churches in Bangor, the bridges over the Penobscot, and some of the local businesses over in Brewer. If you're looking to engage in some natural wonder without going too far off the beaten path, this is absolutely what you are searching for. See more..

Gem in Sebago Lake. They even run a lock to allow boats to move between the lake and the river. You can watch them working the lock and turning the bridge fir boats. Good for a system that was built nearly 200 years ago. The campground was great. I booked a campsite at the last moment, had very few choices and was worried. The site turned out to be fantastic, the bathrooms super clean, the biking good and rates very reasonable. See more..
  29. 4.0 Seacoast Adventure (66 reviews)
    - Great Outdoor Activity During COVID
Monday: Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks • Miniature Golf
    Seacoast Adventure image
First time tubing here and I was pretty happy with how everything was organized. I did not buy tickets online ahead of time which I would suggest along with doing their waiver ahead of time. If you do this and get there early enough you can move right through the lines. The tubing hills are well taken care of and the staff is well organized to make sure you have a good experience. During COVID they require masks and have spacing lines where they are needed. My only knock is I wish the tubes were bigger. I'm 6 feet tall and just felt the tub was better fit for the 8 year old with me than me. Otherwise this is a great spot! Well worth the 20$ for a day pass. See more..

We went here twice with our dogs and had a great time. There is quite a variety of activities for a small park. There's a great play area, big grassy fields, woods, a beach (dogs not allowed), a dock, rocks that go to the water. It's a beautiful location and we had a great time with the dogs who swam, hunted for critters, and ran like crazy! See more..
  32. 4.5 Viles Arboretum (55 reviews)

Our grounds and trails are open every day of the year from Sunrise to Sunset. Please refer to our website for our Visitor Center Hours. Over 200 labeled species of trees, shrubs and "Space Trees" (from seed that traveled on the Space Shuttle) are on display at this 224-acre garden. There are six miles of trails, all marked and signed, and the largest outdoor sculpture display in Maine. Trail maps are available at the trailhead kiosk. A good introductory trail is the one to Viles Pond, which takes one through the hosta garden, past the rock garden, and to Viles Pond, often alive with birds, dragonflies, and frogs croaking. Depending on how long one lingers to enjoy the sights, this one mile trail takes about 45 minutes. Dogs are allowed on the trails, on a leash at all times. Pet owners must pick up after their dogs. This is a great place! Lots of history, beautiful architecture, acres to stroll, trails to explore. The buildings weren't open when we stopped by, unfortunately, but it was a pleasure just tour the grounds. We loved seeing the source of Poland Springs water. People were enjoying the golf course at the nearby resort, which is said to be the oldest in the country. It's a definite future destination when things open up a bit more after the pandemic. Rangeley Lake State Park image
While visiting Maine, my son and I wanted to take a trip to Rangeley Lake State Park. You follow alongside the lake while working your way towards the Park's entrance. Unfortunately the Park was closed when we arrived (I believe due to season). But we weren't disappointed. Along the route you are able to see many gorgeous views of the lake and its shorelines. We were still able to enjoy what the Lake has to offer, even outside the Park's borders. The ride even outside of the Lake side is beautiful. The trees are endless and Maine's country-side beauty can be seen as far as the eye allows. There are also other Lakes and Rivers available to enjoy that are outside of the Park. See more..

    Aroostook State Park image
Just before arriving In Presque Isle, ME on the left is the road that goes to the park if you are heading south from Presque Isle there is a 3 mile and then 2 mile sign but they are misleading as that is the total distance to the park from that spot not to the road that leads off of Rte 1 so look close for the arrow sign that points you there. (Or use GPS) It is a beautiful ride to the park through rolling hills. Once at the park usually there is a “Ranger” there to greet you and collect the fees. If you are a Maine Resident seniors are Free other seniors only pay $1. Rates slightly higher for older people but not too much. We just drove in and spent an hour at Echo lake watching the boats pass by and enjoying cool summer breezes. There are several hiking trails including a very steep trail to the top of a hill with great views ( i previously did limb this hill and remember it being very steep ). A nature trail also at the parking area is much less steep. See more..

We stopped over night on our way to Bar Harbor and took a walk along the beach. Range Ponds State park image
We really enjoyed a day trip to this great state park. There is a lengthy beach with wheelchair accessibility. There is a playground. The beach is sandy and the water was very nice -- not terribly cold. There are restrooms and changing rooms. We went on a weekday and there were quite a few people, including large groups of day camp kids, but I could not call it 'crowded.' Picnic tables appeared a little scarce at first, but later I took a walk and noticed they extended well into the wooded areas a bit away from the beach -- nice if you want more shade, peace and quiet. You can put in your canoe or kayak but as another reviewer said, that area is quiet busy. You can sit in the wooded area, on sandy beach or on the grass. There is a second beach which we could see across the water but we did not visit it. I would definitely return to this park and may consider camping in the area in order to visit there for multiple days of a vacation. See more..

Every city and town in this country should have a veterans memorial park. This one is particularly evocative and is in a beautiful setting by the river. The park has several monuments, including the U.S.S. Maine and Price of Freedom monuments and a Vietnam memorial wall, a wartime jeep and plane, a Navy gun and anchor, flag poles, and at least a dozen dedicated granite benches. The flowers this time of year were in full bloom. See more..

We have been camping in the Wells/Kennebunk area and discovered the Kennebunk Dog Park a few years ago. What a GREAT find - it's a huge dog park, has lots of throw toys, water bowls, benches for the peeps and a separate portion of the park for dogs that don't do well with crowds. It's wide open and has a wooded portion and is without a doubt one of the best parks we've been to. It's awesome to tire the pups out so we can return them to our camper and they'll snooze away some time while we go out and sight-see or grab dinner out! Love this park and so do our pups! Highly recommend if you are looking for a spot to exercise the pups!! See more..

Paths are in good shape and nice river views. I don’t think they should allow bicycles on the trail, it is too narrow and curvy. We came across this quaint little park on our way to the Cliff Walk. It’s across from the famous York Harbor Inn and overlooks the ocean. There’s a walkway down to the Harbor Beach and a connection to the Cliff Walk, itself. There’s also an amusing rock and figurine formation dedicated to the musicians of the Taylor Swift touring band.
