    Eastern Promenade Trail image
We parked along the street on Eastern Promenade. There are large beautiful homes along this street facing the park. According to signs, the park has 68 acres (I think this includes the small section designated as Fort Allen Park) and the original design was done by the Olmsted Brothers. The large grassy expanse and trails are well kept, and quite a few people were out enjoying the sunny afternoon and it felt very safe. We saw people who appeared to be gathering for a small wedding. There are benches and various historical markers scattered throughout. There are great views of Casco Bay for watching boats go by. You can see Fort Gorges out in the bay, and with binoculars you can see Bug Light, Spring Point Ledge Light, and Portland Head Light to the south. See more..
  3. 5.0 Champlain Mountain & Beehive Loop Trail (598 reviews)
    - Age is just a number
    Hiking Trails
Champlain Mountain & Beehive Loop Trail image
64 years old and completed the beehive trail and climb. I won’t lie i almost went and did the bowl trail up. I thought that there were people though younger but in no better shape than I that did it. It really is not that scary fron height standpoint it you concentrate on the path and look out not down. Hiking sticks are no use so leave behind. The hard part takes just about 30 minutes. The iron rungs are not just there to climb on but also a grab bars to help climb. Very glad I did it and the view is awesome. Get there before 8am in the summer or you will have a difficult time parking and having a crowded climb. See more..
  4. 4.5 Bubble Rock (382 reviews)
    - Loved this hike!!
Monday: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Hiking Trails
    Bubble Rock image
Great quick hike with the reward of seeing the giant rock and spectacular views. We started from Bubbles parking lot and did the south bubble trail there and back. There are some areas of climbing over/onto rocks and it is uphill but our 6 year old did well. It’s popular so we went early (7:30) to avoid the crowds. Ample parking that early but the lot is pretty small so I suspect it gets full later. See more..
  5. 5.0 Gorham Mountain Trail (329 reviews)
    - Spectacular
    Hiking Trails
    Gorham Mountain Trail image
My Acadia tour book recommended this trail and I’m so glad I did it! The trailhead is in a parking lot off the east side of the Park Loop Road. You first hike north up the interior, on the mountain, then pop out further north on the Park Loop Road. You walk the rest of the way on Ocean Path which is flat, gravelly, and along the road. Ocean Path has several beautiful views. The mountainous part of the trail is mostly made of granite faces and rocks, so you need to place your feet carefully. Lots of beautiful views. Highly recommend. See more..

    Great Head Trail image
Fabulous views in perfect weather... as always... Keep in mind that at the end of May the counter clockwise path was closed and this path is easier to follow. However the clockwise path is equally gorgeous, just a little trickier to descend than to ascend in two spots. If you want a manageable and short hike with great rewards, Great Head Trail is for you - the views of the ocean, the beach and the islands are stunning. If you arrive at Sand Beach around 5PM, finding a parking spot is very possible and the hike will not take more than 90 minutes. See more..
  9. 5.0 Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail (188 reviews)
    - Prepay for your timed pass
    Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail image
We were forewarned about pre-purchasing our timed tickets for Cadillac mountain so it made it quite easy to drive up to the access gate and enter. We had also purchased the weekly car pass, which I believe is also required along with the additional Cadillac mtn pass. Other than the person from Ohio who was driving at 10MPH and didn't want to pull off or over, the ride up was beautiful and even better at the top. We were able to get some picturesque sunset photos and take the path to explore the mountaintop. Well worth the extra $6! See more..

    Penobscot River Walkway image
We happened upon the River Walk when we were looking for parking for a local restaurant in Brewer. We walked the entire length of the walkway, took about 30 minutes in all, but the scenery was very nice. Plenty of flowers blooming in the early September sun, the river was clean and the waterfowl were plentiful. We walked down some stone steps to the kayak launch and were greeted by no less than a dozen ducks, who are clearly used to people by now, and said hello before heading back up to traverse the rest of the path. You get to see across the Penobscot into the waterfront area of Bangor, as well as the "Children's Garden," the steeples of the churches in Bangor, the bridges over the Penobscot, and some of the local businesses over in Brewer. If you're looking to engage in some natural wonder without going too far off the beaten path, this is absolutely what you are searching for. See more..

    - Excellent Family Hike

    Cascade Stream Gorge Trail image
Find Cascade Stream Gorge in Sandy River Plantation. The 1-mile trail leads into the 90-foot deep gorge of Cascade Stream, providing access to a series of waterfalls and chutes. The trail leaves from the south side of the parking area. Look for white blazes. Shortly after leaving the parking lot, the trail passes under a power line, continues into the woods and along the stream, and eventually connects with the Fly Rod Crosby Trail. There are several good viewpoints of the stream and falls along the trail, which at several points follows the bedrock on the side of the gorge. 15. 5.0 Step Falls Preserve Hiking Trail (42 reviews)
    - Nice Waterfall and Many Swimholes
    Hiking Trails
Step Falls Preserve Hiking Trail image
We took our dog for a short hike in Step Falls Preserve while visiting the area. There's a good size parking area along Route 26, but it can fill up on nice weekends and no parking along the highway. A short yellow-blazed trail follows Wight Brook upstream to Step Falls. It's easy to the base of the falls, but gets steeper past that. Step Falls consists of a series of cascades and small drops totaling almost 200 feet. There are a number of side paths that go out to the falls in different places. Lots of swimholes if you're looking to take a dip. The top of the waterfall is clearly marked where private property begins. Please respect private property and stay within the preserve. See more..

  17. 4.5 The Eastern Trail (37 reviews)
    - TREK IN THE SCARBOROUGH MARSH SECTION
    Hiking Trails
    The Eastern Trail image
After dinner at Ken's Place nearby on Pine Point Road, I revisited the section of The Eastern Trail that cuts through the Scarborough Marsh Wildlife Management Area just down the road from the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center. I find this section to be very scenic because of the way the Nonesuch River snakes around back and forth dozens of times through this part of the marsh. It makes for an interesting landscape. On this visit, I observed two snowy egrets in different places, wading and fishing for their dinners. Some bicyclists went by as did a couple of people jogging with their dogs. It's a popular spot to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. The packed crushed stone trail is level and easy on the feet and joints. Insect repellent is highly recommended. I rate my experience on this section of The Eastern Trail at 4.50. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..

    Hacker's Hill Preserve image
The gate to this 27-acre (10.9 ha), no-fee preserve was open; some days it’s closed. A sign marked the entrance up a steep hill. Limited parking was in two lots. The views of Sebago Lake and the White Mountains were absolutely stunning. The preserve had interpretive displays, a clean outhouse, a picnic table, and a loop trail through fields. I liked all that I found here; I disliked nothing. See more..

    Auburn Riverwalk image
I am in the L/A area for business about 30 days a year. I stay at the two local hotels by the river and always end my day with a walk. I do walk on the Auburn Riverwalk, but then cross over the former railroad bridge to walk back along the Lewiston Riverfront walkway to the bridge on Main Street in Lewiston back across to Auburn. It is a nice comfortable walk. In the early spring, the falls of the Androscoggin River are amazing. There is a nice Veterans Park on the Lewiston side by the falls. See more..

We took our two grand-daughters (6 and 9) here to get them out of the vacation rental house for the morning. We had driven by the trail sign several times and decided to give it a try. The trail is very well marked. About 15 minutes into the hike, we were down along the shore and saw a small island in the cove that had about 60 seals on it. That was an unexpected highlight of the hike. The kids really enjoyed it. See more..

Views from this sturdy pedestrian bridge are outstanding. This bridge spans the Kennebec River about a block below the dam, opposite where US 201 and State Route 2 split downtown. Photographs of the cliffs along the downtown side of the river are awesome. My wife and I very much enjoyed taking time to stroll across the bridge and then back to downtown. We would not have noticed the beautiful park dedicated to veterans of many American wars had we not taken time to stroll across this bridge. On Memorial Day (25 May 2015), our visit to that veterans park was so moving. This is a very worthwhile stop while visiting downtown Skowhegan. See more..

A beautiful park and nicely maintained trail along the river. It's a very easy trail to walk if you stay along the river bank. We took the same way back instead of taking the loop which has some hills. The path is shady and cool with wonderful scenery. Most importantly, not a lot of bugs like other outdoor areas in Maine during the spring season. The park is small but right in the middle of the city. We were told that they are working on extending the trail all the way to I-95. It's a great half day outing. See more..

  33. 3.5 Tassel Top Park (8 reviews)
    - Small Family Beach on Sebago Lake
Monday: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM Hiking Trails
Tassel Top was a small, 35-acre (14 ha) family-friendly town park and town beach on the eastern shore of Sebago Lake. It boasted 980 feet (298 m) of narrow, sandy beachfront. Tall white pines shaded much of the beach. The swimming area was marked off to keep boats out. There was no lifeguard. Picnic tables were near the beach. If visitors tired of the beach, there was an easy half-mile (0.8 km), well-marked nature trail through the woods. Trail maps were at the trailhead. Parking was in two gravel lots. A snack shed was at the lower parking lot. A day pass was $4 per person ages 11-64. We liked most the clean beach sand; we liked least the lack of sunny space on the very narrow beach. See more..

A very enjoyable walkway that extends from Willard Beach, through the campus of Southern Maine Community College, past Spring Point Light, and through the former World War II shipyard (part of which is now a marina). If you walk through the gate into the marina, you'll find signs directing you to stay on the trail, walking past a restaurant, in front of condos and back onto a street. If you keep following along the waterfront, you'll arrive at beautiful Bug Light Park, home of a lighthouse, a great (free admission) history museum, and the giant Shipyard Memorial that has photos and information about the Liberty ships that were built in South Portland in the 1940s. Falmouth Nature Preserve image
This 76-acre (30.75 ha) natural area was just off ME 88 (Foreside Road) near Mill Creek. A dirt parking lot at the end of a short dirt road had room for a few vehicles. A map at the parking lot depicted the trails. Five dirt trails passed through stands of hemlock, maple, beech, and birch and near a salt marsh and a bog. Terrain varied but was never difficult. Trail surfaces were often uneven. Trails were clearly marked. Their total length was about three miles (4.8 km). We found no scenic overlooks, no outhouses, no printed trail maps. While we sought midsummer wildflowers to photograph – and found a few – other visitors were walking dogs, hiking, and bicycling. Despite the lack of amenities, we greatly enjoyed our walk here.
