Salamanca Markets - A must do !

Salamanca Market is one of Australia’s most vibrant and loved outdoor markets and is located at historic Salamanca Place, next to the Hobart waterfront. With over 300 stallholders, it’s an experience that’s hard to beat. While COVID-19 restrictions are in place, a smaller interim market will be held instead of the full Salamanca Market. Tasmania’s Own Market is a selection of your favourite Salamanca Market stallholders and is held each Saturday from 8.30 am to 3 pm. Our new look market consists of around 220 stallholders representing artisans, designers and producers - it’s as Tasmanian as we can make it. You will find fresh produce from local growers, hot coffee and delicious breakfast and lunch options to enjoy, lots of gift ideas and plenty of handmade products. Salamanca Market will return in full as soon as state government conditions allow.

    High end markets
Not usually a massive fan of makeshift markets as I find they tend to sell plants and low quality merchandise imported from SE Asia. The Salamanca Markets definitely aren't part of this category. The market bustles with various upmarket products from all corners of Tasmania. We ended up purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of product from Truffles to paintings. If you have a flexible itinerary in your Tasmanian trip I would definitely try to visit this place on a Saturday. EFTPOS was available at most stores Due to COVID-19 there were some number restrictions. Those entering needed to sign in using the 'Check in TAS' app on their phones. There were long queues to get in by the time we left at midday, so maybe try to get there early to avoid this. We spent around 4 hours here and would suggest others consider pencilling in a similar amount of time as the markets are extensive and took some time to explore in their entirety.

A good couple of hours meandering time needed
We visited first thing at 830am. There were a number of stalls here that were at the twilight markets the night before. My friend regretted not buying the Tassie adventure jackets when she saw them here. There were no other stalls that carried these nor any of the other tourist destinations we visited. The culinary delights were tasty and varied - we picked up espresso martini nougat and enjoyed custard filled donuts for morning tea. The flavoured almonds are only sold here we were told and definitely worth purchasing. We were 3 girlfriends enjoying a weekend away so chose some earrings from Pila Pala pieces to commemorate our time away. They were the artist’s representation of mount wellington so a unique celebration item.
