4.5Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument(385 reviews) - Beautiful Civil War monument Saturday: 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM Spent < 1 hour Military Museums • Monuments & Statues • History Museums

You would think this AMAZING memorial to an assassinated president would be Lincoln’s if you had to guess and were uninformed, but it’s not! Almost a cathedral built to house the remains of James and Lucretia Garfield in the crypt. And it’s free. I know John Rockefeller and some other noteworthy people are buried in this cemetery but this was so beautiful that I just wasn’t concerned. His casket is the only president’s who is above ground, which is also pretty interesting. Be warned, the way the GPS took me to it from downtown Cleveland took me through a TERRIBLE part of the city, so just be aware, and don’t get out and mosey in that area unless absolutely necessary. The cemetery had people about and seemed fine though. It was a bit removed from the roughest area. Aug 2017 visitSee more..

4.5Mothman Statue(77 reviews) - A must see! Monuments & Statues
I feel like this is the first thing you need to see when you get to Point Pleasant. It’s such an iconic statue of events that took place in this town. I went during the week so there wasn’t a line for pictures. It’s located by a nice garden too and next to the Mothman Museum, which is also a must see!See more..

5.0Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery(20 reviews) - "Most impressive benefit of my military service" Spent 1-2 hours Cemeteries • Monuments & Statues • Scenic Walking Areas
one of the best benefits of my military service is the availability of both myself and my wife being laid to rest in this beautiful memorial park. On my weekly visit to my late wife's grave, I am always impressed with how well the cemetery is maintained and how hard the grounds crew works to keep it that way. I have visited her weekly for the past 3 years and it is always worth the visit.See more..
4.5Veterans Memorial Park(18 reviews) - A beautiful walk Spent 1-2 hours Historic Walking Areas • Monuments & Statues • Educational sites • Scenic Walking Areas • Fountains
Even though it was drizzling when I arrived at this park, it still held appeal. In fact, the less than optimal conditions made me think about the conditions of those who served and gave their lives. I don’t think it matters which side politically we are on when it comes to honoring the great bravery and gift of life that these men and women gave for us to be free. A beautifully kept park as well. See more..

4.0Custer Memorial(13 reviews) - Civil War buff must do Monuments & Statues
My wife and I stopped by General Custer's hometown on the way to Steubenville to see the Nutcracker displays. I'm glad we did because it was great! Very nice display of Custer's lifetime and exploits. We were both surprised by the size of the monument; much larger than we would have guessed. The people of New Rumley obviously are very proud of General Custer. New Rumley's very small but quite nice. Well worth the stop in our opinion.See more..

This small wayside park, preserves a pre-Columbian mound and the site of the Battle of Buffington Island, in July 1863. It was here that Gen. John Hunt Morgan's raiders, attempted to cross the Ohio River at Buffington Bar or Island. Some of his command was overran by Union forces however several groups of 3-400 escaped to continue the fight on another day and another skirmish, all across southern, east central and north eastern Ohio, until his surrender on July 26th. The park is part of the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail that winds through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. The Ohio portion was formally dedicated on July 13, 2013.See more..

From the nearby East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, you can see the Walnut Grove Cemetery. It is located at the dead end of North 4th Street. Dating back to 1795, the cemetery is the final resting place of Betty Zane, heroine of the last battle of Fort Henry (now Wheeling, West Virginia). The statue of Betty Zane is carrying gun powder at the entrance of this very old cemetery. What an unexpected surprise, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!See more..

The U.S. Grant Native Son Statue is one of two dedicated to the former General and President in Georgetown. It was dedicated in August of 2012. The statute stands at the Northeast Corner of the town square at East Grant and North Main. It was patterned after a Grant statue in Washington, DC. Washington DC and Georgetown are the only towns in America to have two statues of U.S. Grant. The statue has sponsor's bricks surrounding the black granite base. The base features images of Grant's military service on its left panel, and images of his time as President on the right panel. The back panel reads " Let Us Have Peace", from his first Inaugural address. The statue presents a dignified and formal appearance, as befits this monument. The statute derives its name from the fact that Ulysses Grant considered Georgetown his home. He lived there from age one, until he entered West Point at age seventeen. Grant wrote about Georgetown in his memoirs "...this place remained my home..."See more..

In the town square, Somerset, the home of famous Civil War cavalry general Phil Sheridan, sits astride his horse, directing his troops at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia. Visitors to Georgetown, Ohio who are visiting U.S. Grant sites will like to know that there are two statues to see. Georgetown shares this distinction with Washington, DC. This statue is located on the grounds of the Ohio Veteran's Home. It is located just a short drive from the Grant Boyhood Home. Visitors can park in a small parking lot at the veteran's home, which is also the start of public walking trails. Remember that this statue is located at a rest home for veterans, so please show respect. The Grant statue was paid for by an employee of the home. It was dedicated in 2004. The statue captures Grant's humble appearance, which belies his brilliance and determination. Indeed, when seen from behind, one even wonders if he has actually found the right statue. The sculptor has really created a great likeness which reflects Grant's character. This statue is certainly worth seeking out for those who are interested in Ulysses S Grant.See more..
4.0Mound Hill Cemetery(1 review) - Grave of Giants Spent < 1 hour Cemeteries • Monuments & Statues New York has a whole team of Giants, but in the 1800's, Ohio was home to a family of giants. Martin Van Buren Bates never achieved the political stature of his name sake, but he far surpassed the fairly short president in physical stature. Bates was born in Kentucky in 1837 as a normal sized child but experienced a tremendous growth spurt as a child, reaching seven feet tall before reaching his teens. He finally topped off at eight feet tall and nearly four hundred pounds. During the civil war, he fought for the south and earned the rank of captain. Union adversaries said he was tall as two men and fought like 50. After the war, he toured with a circus, met and married a woman named Anna who also happened to be eight feet tall, and settled down in Seville Ohio. The couple had a 23 pound son who did not survive. Imagine that labor, ladies. Anna died shortly after. Captain Bates erected a life size statue of his wife at her grave. He remarried and lived until 1919, when he joined his wife and son in the family plot. A sign just inside the main entrance directs visitors to the Bates' final resting place. The entire cemetery is called mound city because it is on top of an Indian mound with the earliest settlers at the top.See more..
We were passing through and stopped for a nice lunch in Sunbury, and were pausing at unusual roadside attractions on our way. This attraction is often listed on websites as one unusual thing to see in Ohio. To seee it, you drive around the McDonald's that's just west of the I-75 exit for Sunbury. It's a bust, in more ways than one. It's called a statue but it's only the head, shoulders and arms of the famous clown, so by definition it's a bust--and overall it's about 9 feet tall, les impressive than I'd expected. The restaurant has placed it in a nice little park area, and it's free, so if you want an amusing short stop to break the highway monotony, I'd say it's worth it.See more..
3.0Firefighters' Memorial(1 review) - Never Forget Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
We were walking around the downtown community of the city of Loveland and came across this Firefighters' Memorial honoring the sacrifices made by local public safety officials. Originally built in 1997, the city recently held a ceremony to dedicate it as the Chief Candice M. Cook Memorial Park and the Police and Fire Memorial Walk. On display was an old Gamewell fire alarm call box as well as a police call box. In front of the fire alarm box, there was a memorial bench dedicated to Cincinnati fallen fireman Daryl Gordon whom died in the line of duty in 2015. In front of the police box, there was a memorial bench dedicated to Cincinnati police officer Sonny Kim whom also died in the line of duty in a separate incident in 2015. There was a giant bell on top of a concrete block. The bell has local significance to the city and its firefighters. Inside the concrete block is a time capsule from when the memorial was first built back in 1997. Yet another piece on display was an I-beam from the World Trade Center terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001 in NYC in remembrance of the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice on that fateful day.See more..
5.0Astronaut Grove(1 review) - Small but Memorable memorial Park Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues • Scenic Walking Areas
I stopped by Astronaut Grove in Westerville while biking the Alum Creek Trail in December. It is a relatively small park, and only a short stop would be sufficient to get the essence of the park. But, at the same time it is a memorial park where one can spend time pondering the contributions and sacrifice by astronauts. The brick walkway includes small star-shaped plaques dedicated to martyrs of the Apollo 1 and Challenger accidents. There is a sculpture “Reaching for the Stars” dedicated to the future of space exploration at the circular end of the brick walkway. Astronaut Grove is certainly worth a stop if you are in the area.See more..
