    Loveland Castle image
So, some places in the castle are locked mostly places that I would think are storage or that would allow you into an area where they are still working. No one wants to fall through a floor and get hurt. It's on the smaller side, but I managed to spend almost 2 hrs here just looking around and taking pictures inside and out, plus across from the parking area is a river and I walked over to that also. I was afraid that they wouldnt have parking when I got there midday but they did. I thought it was really nice and people inside talked about the man who built this whole thing. It was really cool. Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse image
This 1871 tower and keeper's building in nearby Fairport Harbor have been on my bucket list for a long time. There is a local TV station that did a segment on Fairport Harbor and showed the dilemma they are facing at the lighthouse because of government lockouts resulting in diminished revenue for upkeep of this fine resource. That's what made me get up and go for a visit today. First I emailed the keeper for information on hours and prices so I could plan my trip a little in advance. I took a few photos around the tower and I will attempt to share them here. The museum has so many archives and relics from a bygone age of Great Lakes shipping (not SO very far in the past after all) that cannot be cataloged, in my opinion. See more..

    Hancock Historical Museum image
The museum began with the acquisition of the Hull-Flater House at 422 West Sandusky Street, and first opened to the public in 1971. The house was built in 1881 by Jasper Hull, co-founder of the Findlay Artificial Gas and Light Company, and was one of the grandest homes of the day. Today, the home still serves as the welcoming “front porch” of an expansive development that has grown to nine facilities, including the Little Red Schoolhouse and the new Marathon Energy & Transportation Annex. In addition to an expansive campus, the museum houses more than 70,000 books, photographs, manuscripts and artifacts in its collections. Without the efforts of the Hancock Historical Museum, we would lose many of the stories, buildings, memories and treasures – and the lessons they hold – for future generations. See more..

    - More than we expected
Sunday: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
    The Pennsylvania House image
Built in 1839, the Pennsylvania House was a popular and respected inn along the National Road. The 7000 square foot Federal-style structure was built using tenon and mortise construction. The Pennsylvania House has been included on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973. The first floor houses one of America's finest button collections. A gift of Lagonda Chapter member Grace Porter upon her death in 1948, the collection of 100,000 buttons offers a historic showcase of one of fashion's favorite forms of adornment and status. The recent restoration saw the re-interpretation of several rooms to reflect the house's use and function as an inn and tavern from 1839 to 1869. This can be seen in the recreation of the tap room, general store, ladies parlor or formal dining room, and the drovers' room. The first floor assembly room offers a pictorial timeline showing the house's place within local and national history. It is accompanied by a display of artifacts from the entire lifespan of the house discovered during the basement's excavation. The second floor children's room spotlights a fully furnished, twelve-room Federal dollhouse donated by Lagonda Chapter member Ruth Bayley. It contains period furniture in black walnut and cherry handcrafted by John Kunkel. In the 1870s, Drs. Samuel and Ada Adams rented space in the house for their joint medical practice. A second floor room in the 1850s wing has been furnished with medical equipment of the period including Dr. Samuel Adams' electroschock therapy kit. See more..

I came to the Center for their annual paranormal exploration of the building, which is the old county poor house. My companions and I were so intrigued that we came back the next day to check out the exhibits. They really did a nice job with it. Many of the rooms were set up to show you what Victorian parlors and Civil War camps were like. Others were theme centered "stuff under glass" style exhibits. There was lots to see. Even though we were there on a day when they did not offer guided tours, the staff members showed us some things they thought we would be particularly interested in, including a preview of a not-yet-open new exhibit on the old street car system. It was well worth the $3 admission. See more..

Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument image
We make every effort to see all the NPS Monuments, Historical Sites and Parks when we travel. This is a nice find and somewhat isolated. We were lucky to that the site was open; we phoned ahead to make sure it was open. A diamond in the rough! Very historical with an intriguing story about Charles Young. The student interns did a fine job providing a guided tour of the site and telling the life story of Charles Young. See more..
  49. 4.5 Underground Railroad Museum (9 reviews)
    - An unexpected gem. . .
Sunday: Spent 2-3 hours History Museums
    Underground Railroad Museum image
I came out to Belmont County, Ohio, to do some research on my family tree. Unfortunately, I learned next to nothing about my family who lived here. However, I saw the sign for the Underground Railroad Museum while we were coming in on I-70. I have a great interest in the Civil War. So my husband and I visited the museum. Dr..Mattox has put his heart, soul, and considerable intellect into this museum. It is an incredible place! Dr. Mattox is an exceptional man. He takes time to talk to each guest, wanting to hear his/her story. He is profoundly welcoming. He takes a photograph of each visitor at the end of his/her visit. What struck me is how he sees each person who comes to the museum as a unique and valuable human being--in strong contrast to how some people have viewed people of color--as subhuman. When we refuse to see the humanity in others, it enables us to treat them in horribly cruel ways. This museum is definitely worth a visit. See more..
