Beautiful rock formations. Fairly easy trail on a one-way trail system. We visited on a Thursday afternoon, was not terribly crowded. The creek beds were pretty dry, not much rain lately. Saw snapping turtle sunning and you can see trout in the streams. The water fall was minimal but the walk was still worth every step. See more..

We started at Gambier and headed west towards Mount Vernon. Wow, such a beautiful ride. The path is well maintained and the scenery is amazing. Enjoyed how there are benches along the way to safely stop and take in the beauty of the area. After our return to the Gambier stop, we had a picnic lunch in front of the restored train. There are tables available under the shelter. Our daughter loved to be able to climb aboard and explored. Already planning a return trip this weekend to head east on the trail from Gambier. Holmes County Trail image
This trail is wonderful. We accessed it at Millersburg depot and rode 6 miles south to the Killbuck depot where it ends. Not much at the Killbuck trailhead but restrooms, picnic tables, playground and ample parking at Millersburg. Nice wide, flat trail shared with walkers and Amish buggies. Mostly shaded with woods and wetlands along the way. Great birding too! Signage states that it someday will extend from Lake Erie to the Ohio River! We’d like to comeback and ride north to Holmesville and beyond next trip! See more..

    Whispering Cave Trail image
We had been to Old Man's Cave many times before, but this time we decided to try the trail to Whispering Cave. It is so worth the effort! From the Old Man's Cave parking lot to the Cave and back it was close 5 miles, it took us 3 1/2 hours. There were muddy places and places where you have to climb up tree roots. I run 1 to 3 miles a week and this still was a little challenging for me. If you are physically able, do it, you won't be sorry. Photos can not describe the beauty and wonder of this place. Such a clean place, neat viewing tower and not difficult trails. Great place to bring a picnic butwe found a gem 3 minutes away "Break by the Lake in Perry. Able to enjoy a one of the best lunches while watching Lake Erie. Charlotte the Owner served us and told us about the area and gave us a candy treat as we were leaving, The menu was varied and so tasty . Our visit included our dog on a leash. The trail was wide and maintained. The mile long trail does not have a lot of shade because it is mostly a flat, meadow walk. There were plenty of butterflies and flowers to view. There is also a small pond with frogs and turtles. It has a deck to stand on. The bog has a viewing platform with stairs. There are some benches for resting. At the beginning of the trail there is a map and restrooms. It overall has a country feel. See more..

We walked the mile loop trail while we were In Tiffin, OH for a few days. The trail was nice. A lot of steps on one end. Don’t even consider the .2 mile trail to the bridge. Nothing to see there. When we were there the mosquitoes were out in droves and constantly bitting us. All around it’s a nice one mile loop trail with steps going down on one end and going up the trail on the other end. We choose to walk up the abandoned road instead of the trail to get out of the woods and quit getting bit by mosquitoes. See more..

    Heritage Trail Metro Park image
The Heritage Trail Metro Park is a "rail to trail" park that extends from Hilliard Ohio and almost to Plain City. The 7 mile trail crosses through scenic farmland and several small parks along the way including Homestead park off Cosgray and the Heritage Park itself off Hayden Run Road. The Heritage Park has a playground and a large dog walking area. The trail itself is paved and I often see lots of bikers and roller-bladers on the trail. There is also a short horseback riding trail that runs parallel to the main trail for a few miles. It's a flat trail and not difficult at all, but it's a very scenic walk. See more..
  26. 4.5 Orchard Hills Park (18 reviews)
    - The old golf course is almost erased
Spent 1-2 hours Parks • Hiking Trails
    Orchard Hills Park image
I went for a hike at Orchard Hills Park on a Sunny Tuesday afternoon at the end of September. I learned to golf here many years ago, so it was surreal to see it now. It is at least 5 years into its transition to a natural meadow. There are some areas I still recognize as particular holes, but in most areas the course is erased. The park has some rolling hills and is a pretty easy walk. The fall wildflowers were in full bloom and this place will look even better when the leaves change later in the fall. There were very few people here and you can get a great walk in. Mine was about 2 miles by sticking mostly to the perimeter of the old course. There were many options to make that longer or shorter. 27. 5.0 Girdled Road Reservation (17 reviews)
    - One of the best parks in Lake County
Sunday: 6:00 AM - 11:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Equestrian Trails • Hiking Trails • Cross-country Ski Areas
    Girdled Road Reservation image
For those local to Lake County (or nearby) this is the go-to spot to do an invigorating hike. If you do a bit of weaving about and backtracking, you can get ten miles in. But don't worry if you're not a seasoned hiker! Both the north and south entrances (there are three to the park) provide some much easier flat hiking. The south entrance also has a children's playground. All three entrances have parking and rest rooms, plus the south and Skok Meadow entrances have pavilions. Do pay attention to signage and make sure that you are heading back to the correct parking area as you can get turned around and turn your three mile wander into something significantly longer. A new viewing area at the north end (handicap accessible) provides a gorgeous view of the creek below. See more..
  28. 4.5 Hoover Mudflats Boardwalk at Hoover Reservoir (15 reviews)
    - summer or winter great walkway
    Hiking Trails
Hoover Mudflats Boardwalk at Hoover Reservoir image
Busy fishing place spring to fall. A bit extra bird poop at the farthest area which is less visited by people. If you like shooting great scenery and/or birds, with is the place. The views change constantly as sun moves across the sky and occasional fogs, winds, etc. reset the scenery. Walk slowly and enjoy all the scapes. Kayakers, pontoon boaters, canoers, etc. When finished walking here, go about 1/2 mile on N. Galena Rd. to the walkway next to the cemetary. Here you will cross the old train trestle overlooking the Big Walnut Creek. Another excellent scape. Walk a bit further to the vista platform overlooking the gorge. Spend the day in Galena eating and walking. It's transformational. See more..
  29. 5.0 Chapin Forest Reservation (15 reviews)
    - Woods, Trails, Quarries
Spent 1-2 hours State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
    Chapin Forest Reservation image
Chapin Forest is a surprisingly large park of something like 400 acres. If you look at a map, it's more or less in a figure 8 shape so it's like two 200-acre parks next to each other. The main route is off of route 306/Chillicothe Road, but there is also a second entrance, dedicated to cross country skiing, off of Hobart Road (which itself is off of Route 6). In any case, this is a heavily wooded park with lots of trails that are good for walking. Parts skirt along one or two quarries with dramatic views that look more fitting for the west than Ohio. There are also high points from which you can have nice views over five miles or so of woods up to Lake Erie. There are lots of picnic facilities and parking areas along the way. This is a very nice park to have a nice walk most months, and cross country skiing when there is snow on the ground. See more..

  34. 5.0 Licking county Bike trails (12 reviews)
    - Great Ride
Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails • Forests
    Licking county Bike trails image
Part of the Licking County bike trails, TJ Evans is a great ride. Mostly flat which is great for runners and bike beginners. The trail travels from Johnstown to Newark passing through Alexandria and Granville. It’s about 14 miles one way. TJ Evans does connect to other trails that are a part of the county trail system. There is a place to park before arriving at one of the trail entrances in Granville. Couple of issues is lack of signage. At several intersections there were no signs telling you which way to go. Additionally some of the locals don’t understand trail etiquette. The trail is wide enough to allow one person/biker to travel in opposite directions and pass each other. However local walkers tend to walk in large groups blocking the path which prevented bikers and runners to pass on their left. I personally had to use my brakes several times to avoid a collision despite yelling “on your left” See more..

This 1/2 mile loop is very well maintained all down in decking. It makes for a great walking surface with only slight incline in one area and minor areas where not flat. The path is two people wide and left nature intact. Very nice area to observe the unique nature and there is wildlife running about as in chimpmunks, squirrels, rabbits and snakes. Turtles and deer are possible also to my knowledge. Nice peaceful scenic walk. There are bugs of course so some spray depending on your desire could be handy. Nice clean well maintained parking is available. Highly enjoyed as long as you know what it is before going. Easy in and out. See more..

Took this trail after riding about 10 miles on the Kokosing Gap Trail. The signs from the Kokosing Gap to this trail are clearly marked in the town of Danville. The trail is so beautiful traveling through the woods which gives plenty of shade during the summer months. Congressman Ralph Regula Towpath Trail Park image
We were visiting family in Ohio and came out for a hike two mornings on the Towpath Trail. For both hikes, we parked at the Lake Avenue Trailhead in Massillon and went south one day and north the next. The entire Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail is about 100 miles, stretching from Cleveland to Tuscarawas County. The Stark County section was named for Congressman Regula, who was a big supporter of preserving the canalway. The trail is great for hiking, biking and other non-motorized travel. It follows the Tuscarawas River for most of the way through Stark County. A lot of wildflowers were blooming when we visited. And despite nice weather, we really didn't see a lot of other people on the trail. Overall, a nice greenway trail for a hike if in the area. See more..

    Walnut Woods Metro Park image
This is about a 20 minute drive from where we live so it’s a perfect drive for our dogs - those that can be in a dog park, and those that need to be walked. The dog park has an enclosed in “pond” of sorts that is perfect for dogs that love water but can’t play in the creeks off trail here. There’s a small agility type set up for dogs too, and for the most part people bring in dog friendly dogs. You do still have the occasional irresponsible person that will bring in a dog that causes fights and won’t leave. The trails and scenery are gorgeous - and there are plenty of streams to cool off in. It’s worth going off the beaten path in this park to see where you end up! See more..

Summertime visitors will enjoy the cooling waters of Kraut Creek, a pristine tributary of state designated Scenic River, Greenville Creek. In the autumn, the preserve's beech, maple, oak and hickory trees will paint the sky with oranges, reds and yellows. Even in the dead of winter, hikers can stumble upon a fishing Great Blue Heron, foraging white-tailed deer and tracks of many others! See more..

    - Towner's Woods off the bike and hike trail
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
First there is a fair amount of free parking and it is well maintained. The Towner's Woods ties into the hike and bike trail or go off into the woods to hike. The trails are well marked by still maintain the feel of a natural walking path. Walk by lake, big areas, dense wooded areas, open woods, and a grass field. The trails depending on how you use them can make from a long or short hike with options in between. I really enjoy Towner's Woods and highly recommend it. There are bugs of course because of water and woods. If you walk down the bike and hike path maybe 1/2 mile on the right us a 1/2 mile loop that I also like because different from other trails. My favorite spot in the Kent area to go to. Also ignore bridge out signs as you can get to parking bridge closed right by woods but doesn't affect getting there. See more..

This is a lovely Wood County park on the Portage River south of Pemberville Ohio. It is in the area of a purported winter encampment of Harrison's troops during the War of 1812. The county has allowed half of the park area to go back to its natural state. There is a trail and access to the Portage River, which is often shallow enough to allow for wading. There is a forest trail and a meadow trail. There is play ground equipment and a large open area for ball games. There are 2 closed-in shelter houses for rent and a covered area with picnic tables Kids love it! See more..

I visited the Farrington Reserve for about 30 minutes on a crisp December morning. The waterfall was flowing, and I had the bridge across the river all to myself. It was magical! I only stayed for 30 minutes but thoroughly enjoyed it. See more..

    Veteran Legacy Woods Park image
I went to the Veterans Legacy Woods park on a Thursday afternoon in early October. This park used to be the Wicked Woods golf course and is in its second or third year of going wild and being planted with native wildflowers. The paved cart paths are in place, but you can walk anywhere you want. It was interesting to see the old course this way. I had golfed there many times over the years. My goal was to get in a brisk walk at around two miles and this park is made for that but be prepared for the ups and down terrain. Signs of the old course are still there…sand traps, layout, hole marker posts, shelters…but they are just fading into the landscape. There was hardly anyone there and I stuck pretty much to the perimeter and was able to get in a little over 1 ½ mile walk. The wildflowers were great in bloom. The leaves were just starting to turn, it will be a great place to see the fall colors in late October. It will be interesting to se how the park evolves. See more..
