4.5Heinen's Downtown(708 reviews) - Neat grocery in the middle of Downtown Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
Solid small grocery in the middle of downtown. If you are staying at one of the downtown hotels, it is very walkable and have enough small stapes for either a light meal or snacks if you don't want to pay bar prices. Very good wine and beer selection as well as some varied cheeses. The nice thing is that they preserved the old architecture of the bank including the large stained glass that is the roof of the rotunda and the paintings along the walls. Even if you don't really buy anything, it is worth a visit to check out.See more..
4.5Carew Tower(642 reviews) - Come See How Beautiful Cincinnati Is! Architectural Buildings
Whenever people come to visit me, the first place I take them is to the top of Carew tower. It is one of the rare places you have open rooftop views of the entire city. You can look out across the river into Kentucky, or look north to the Over the Rhine area and take in views of the hills and river. If you have someone there to point out the sights, even better. I love Cincinnati and blog about it often. Carew Tower is one of my must-see’s in a city full of many great attractions.See more..

4.0Terminal Tower Observation Deck(268 reviews) - Beautiful Building that was for a Long Time Tallest Building Outside New York Architectural Buildings • Observation Decks & Towers
This is the second tallest building in Cleveland today and was when built the tallest building in the world outside of New York city. It is a great example of the Beau Arts style that inspired massive building complexes early in the 20th Century. At 52 stories and 708 feet it is by far the tallest of these structures. There is an observation deck that is open to visit on weekends. We had tickets but our flight changed and we did not land in Cleveland until after the deck was closed. Still I really enjoyed seeing the building. Both its height and location makes it the prominent Cleveland landmark despite not being the tallest anymore.See more..
4.5Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House(264 reviews) - Good Restoration of a Prairie Style Home Saturday: 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
The Westcott House was built in 1908 for Burton J. And Orpha L. Westcott. The Westcott property is the only Prairie style house designed by Wright in the state of Ohio. The grounds include the main house and a garage with pony stable connected by an extensive pergola. In 1946, due to the housing crisis following World War II, the house was divided into multiple apartments. The house no longer reflected the vision of its architect. The original furniture and most of the original light fixtures and other details were removed from the house. Lack of resources led to an extreme deterioration of the structure. The house has recently undergone a multi-million restoration. Each of its features - from art glass to original hardware and hand-decorated encaustic walls to massive urns - has been returned to its 1908 appearance. Furniture has been rebuilt according to Wright's specifications and gardens re-landscaped in keeping with the time. The house is now managed by a non-profit organization.See more..
3.5World's Largest Basket(132 reviews) - It's a huge basket (what else did you want)? Architectural Buildings
OK...this site is off the main I-70 thoroughfare, but hwy 16 is a MUCH more scenic and enjoyable route. If you are gojng to be site-seeing, get off the interstate! So, What are you looking for here? A giant picnic basket! There's no Yogi or Bu-bu...but its a building constructed as a giant basket! No, you can't go in it. No, there's no souvenirs. Is it a great story (see the Smithsonian article about it)? Yes. See more..
Our family drove from Cleveland this past week to Mansfield to visit and take the Hollywood tour. Our GPS routed us to the active institution next store and the kind officer opened a gate since I was struggling to backup my vehicle to get on the correct path. Yes, I was technically trespassing. On arrival, you need to check in and get a wristband. This tiny room is very historical in appearance but has a horrible echo. Check it over before leaving the window. Ours was wrong and a helpful guide got us the right ones. Organizing our tour was a bit tough but once you have your ear buds and microphone box we were all set. We started 15 min late due to construction on Route 30 backing others up. Thank goodness there was a fantastic museum to spend time in! The box Andy left Red, original “Brooks was Here” sign, info about the reformatory itself decades before Shawshank and Air Force One, which was filmed here too. Tour was substantial and I enjoyed our local guide’s enthusiasm along with guides-in-training. If you can’t afford a guided tour, fear not! The audio tour is quite extensive and at this time only $5. Our tour was 35$ per adult and 2 hrs long. Local guide had info about where the oak tree was, scenes shot at Malabar farms, making this a more comprehensive destination and called this The Shawshank Trail. I would certainly come back, especially now I know how to get there. I applaud the preservation society for saving this from a wrecking ball and bought some goods to support them. Hope is perhaps the best of things and we need to get busy living so as to pass old ways of thinking on, even if they were mistakes so the next gen can learn from them.See more..

We got to drop in as part of Parents Weekend of Oberlin College. My husband has been fascinated by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian style homes for some time and we were excited to take the tour. Home was designed in 1947 by FLW himself for the Weltzheimer Family. It was later restored to its glory by Prof Johnson as some developers tried to ‘modernize’ it. Amazing to walk through this bit of architectural history! See more..

4.0The Pennsylvania House(24 reviews) - More than we expected Saturday: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
Built in 1839, the Pennsylvania House was a popular and respected inn along the National Road. The 7000 square foot Federal-style structure was built using tenon and mortise construction. The Pennsylvania House has been included on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973. The first floor houses one of America's finest button collections. A gift of Lagonda Chapter member Grace Porter upon her death in 1948, the collection of 100,000 buttons offers a historic showcase of one of fashion's favorite forms of adornment and status. The recent restoration saw the re-interpretation of several rooms to reflect the house's use and function as an inn and tavern from 1839 to 1869. This can be seen in the recreation of the tap room, general store, ladies parlor or formal dining room, and the drovers' room. The first floor assembly room offers a pictorial timeline showing the house's place within local and national history. It is accompanied by a display of artifacts from the entire lifespan of the house discovered during the basement's excavation. The second floor children's room spotlights a fully furnished, twelve-room Federal dollhouse donated by Lagonda Chapter member Ruth Bayley. It contains period furniture in black walnut and cherry handcrafted by John Kunkel. In the 1870s, Drs. Samuel and Ada Adams rented space in the house for their joint medical practice. A second floor room in the 1850s wing has been furnished with medical equipment of the period including Dr. Samuel Adams' electroschock therapy kit.See more..
4.5Brumback Library(22 reviews) - Beautiful facility with exceptional care of the stacks. Architectural Buildings
The Ohio TuesDayTrips crew happened upon the Brumback Library and decided to check it out. It is a cool building erected in 1901 and has the distinction of being the first county library in the United States. Go figure, here in Van Wert, Ohio. This is one truly remarkable building shaped like a castle and the interior is phenomenal with the original marble tile floors and vaulted ceiling. The entry is a sitting area and actually has a grand piano in it for community events. One thing that impressed Ken was the neatness of the stacks. All the books were evenly set in the shelves. At most libraries, the books are jutting in or out on the shelves in some messy random order. Not here. That takes time and attention to detail.See more..

4.5Leetonia Beehive Coke Ovens Park(8 reviews) - Well Worth a Visit Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Parks
They have made some nice improvements to the park in recent years, including the trail that accesses the nearby bike-and-hike trail. There’s ample signage to tell the history and function of the coke ovens. A little more could be done on trails in the park and it would be nice if they’d restore one or more of the ovens to what it would have been like back in the day.See more..
5.0St. Nicholas Catholic Church(8 reviews) - Prettiest Catholic Church in the area Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Universities & Schools • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
I drop in for the late Mass from time to time. My children love it and consider it a special treat to go to St. Nicholas. The music is organ and cantor. The current priest can preach a cogent homily. The real highlight of St. Nicholas is the interior of the church. If you go to Mass, you kind of know what you are getting but the surroundings can vary radically in this area. The interior of St. Nicholas is unmatched in the nearby counties. A word for visitors, most of the parking is on a slope.See more..

5.0Look About Lodge(5 reviews) - A lesser-known but enjoyable part of this Metropark Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Scenic Walking Areas
We have not been inside the lodge building itself yet, but we have walked around it and peered into a the windows many times and it looks charming. For us,the real draw was the trails. If you follow the path out of the parking lot past the picnic area with a stone grill, you’ll soon encounter a winding path across roots next to a ravine that will take you to a branch of the Buckeye Trail. Once you reach the valley and turn left, you’ll be given a variety of options and trails, one or two of which go by some dramatic little waterfalls and gorges. Be sure to download (and also print out!) a map from the Cleveland Metroparks website, since it is easy to become turned around!See more..

I look forward to coming here anytime I'm in the Columbus area. You can go inside the mansion though there isn't much to see, it's still pretty. Of course two of the floors are in use as a preschool and offices and the first floor can be rented, so it all depends on that. I haven't wandered too far from the mansion but enjoy visiting for half an hour or so and reading or just enjoying the grounds. I hope to hike more of the park later this summer.See more..

5.0U.S. Grant Schoolhouse(2 reviews) - Schoolhouse of a Great Leader Architectural Buildings
The U.S. Grant Schoolhouse is located just a short distance from his boyhood home in Georgetown. Grant attended this school from 1829 to 1836. The school has been restored to appear as it did while Grant attended. Unfortunately, it is currently closed to tours. However you can walk around the building and see inside of its windows. You can see everything, although there is no guide for interpretation. Dr. Curt Fields has made a video on YouTube which takes you through the school, explaining it fully. Dr. Fields has also filmed one on the Grant Boyhood Home. Both are interesting to watch, and I would recommend seeing them prior to your tour. Visitors to Georgetown Grant sites may also take note that Grant also attended a "subscription" school located across the street of his boyhood home. The address is 208 East Grant. It is a private residence, so please be respectful. A small plaque commemorates this.See more..

5.0St Mark's Victory Lutheran Church(1 review) - Lutheran Tradtition still holds Saturday: Spent 1-2 hours Architectural Buildings • Scenic Walking Areas • Churches & Cathedrals My wife used to talk about her Lutheran Upbringing in the 70s. This was the first church that we had found which still held with the traditional Lutheran Call and Response format. The church is small but very welcoming. Over half the church families greeted my wife when we stopped in at the church. There is a strong love of God here and Deacon delivered a powerful message. If you would like to see how Church was in the past or miss the old style of service, I strongly encourage you to come and visit St Marks. 3.0Logan County Courthouse(1 review) - Historic courthouse closed Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Government Buildings The Logan County Courthouse in Bellefontaine is a Second Empire building listed on the national register of historic places. Unfortunately, it is currently closed for renovation and is completely surrounded by fencing and scaffolding. In fact, the top tiers of the tower have been removed from the building so it doesn't make a very pretty picture these days. You can still read the various historic plaques through the fence and walk the first concrete street in America, but you cannot enter the courthouse structure. I could not find an estimated date of completion for the project, but I would guess it be at least 2016 before you can take a tour of the historic building.See more..

5.0Stone Academy(1 review) - An Important Link in the Underground Railroad Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings This 1808 house was built before this area was linked with Zanesville across the river at the time. Ohio Anti-Slavery Society conventions were held here in the 1830's, and the enmity by the pro-slavery people in Zanesville almost caused the death of the owner and the burning of the building. It became an important link in the Underground Railroad with a hiding place under the house for runaway slaves, who were assisted in their escape to Canada and their freedom. The guided tour was excellent. I also suggest that you include a visit to the nearby Dr. Increase Matthews House, which can be visited with a combination ticket.See more..
