Hidden Gems Places To Visit in Alabama, United States

  1. 5.0 Southeastern Raptor Center (25 reviews)
    - Worth the Trip
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Southeastern Raptor Center image
We visited the Southeastern Raptor Center in Auburn in June 2014. You must call in advance and schedule an appointment if you are a small private party. There is a fee associated. When we went it was $100 and it was well worth every penny. The fee is used to help fund the rehabilitation and care of the raptors at the center. I have never seen such a variety of raptors in one place and I was fascinated by each of these beautiful creatures. We had the privilege of seeing about 25 and learning something about each of them. Marianne and Andrew made this informative and educational presentation interesting and fun to all ages in our group (ages 12-70+). They brought some of the birds out for us to see up close. Let me tell you, it is a thrill to be that close to a golden eagle! It was definitely the highlight of our trip. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in birds or wildlife-- a very unique experience that we are still talking about. See more..

Porsche Sport Driving School - Day Classes image
I attended Porsche Sport Driving school day classes August 21-22, 2018. I was an observer for the August 23-24, 2018 classes. The Barber Motorsports track is perfection. It has different degrees of banking, elevations, 3 straight a ways. The instructors are the cream of the crop. Whether you are a novice or experienced driver, I would highly recommend attending, it is worth every penny. The entire staff and catering company is top notch. It is a well oiled machine. Positive comments from the staff, yet they let you know what you need to do to improve. Each day is an all day event, wear comfortable clothing, tie shoes, sunglasses. See more..

  4. 5.0 Monte Sano Nature Preserve (24 reviews)
    - Love hiking multiple trails
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Monte Sano Nature Preserve image
We have explored several of the trails in recent weeks. Most of them accessible from trailheads that have free parking. (For a while that was our hesitation for going to Monte Sano. We thought you would have to pay. Which, if you'd like to park in the state park, you do. But, there are plenty of Land Trust parking areas to explore the trails for free.) The trails were well marked, and most were well traversed. We always enjoy exploring and catching some beautiful views, or waterfalls, creeks, animals, etc. We have been able to do all of the trails we have done with our four kids easily. Ages 13, 12, 8, 6. 5. 5.0 Dauphin Island Marina (24 reviews)
    - Family fun excursion
    Spent 2-3 hours Marinas
    Dauphin Island Marina image
We booked a fishing excursion through Dauphin Island Marina and it was an awesome experience. The two people working on the boat were wonderful! I was nervous going into it as I had never been on a fishing excursion, and I knew there would be quite a few people onboard. It all worked out, everybody caught something and most people took home some fish to make for dinner. They exceeded my expectations. This was a low key excursion that was great for families with kids. The crew were patient, helped when somebody reeled in a big catch and helped cast out. We would definitely do it again. See more..

They feature 2 huge jumping trampolines, one geared for the younger kids, and our favorite, the pedal cars! Even the adults can act like kids in pedal tractors and four wheelers, all safely enclosed on a dirt track. The giant rubber tire swing was a big hit, as was the huge corrugated plastic slide, big enough for the adults, and the 4 huge corn boxes. There are climbing structures all over the property, as well as picnic areas. The hay ride goes out to the pumpkin fields, where for 7.00, you can pick and bring home any size pumpkin you can carry. Blalock Seafood and Specialty Market image
We stopped at Blalock several times on our trip to Orange Beach. Their seafood is unbeatable and so fresh! They also have impeccable customer service. On our last visit, I asked if they had any more of the delicious looking caramel cakes and cupcakes I’d seen the time before. The young man who was helping us asked the manager and he came out to greet us. He then offered to see if he could get one for us from his wife, who was the baker. He ended up arranging for us to pick up a caramel cake for our New Year’s celebration the next morning. We were so grateful for their impeccable service and kindness. This combination of delicious seafood and the cake made our trip and our holiday. Thanks so much! We will definitely be back on our future vacations to OB. See more..

    - Peaceful
    Monuments & Statues
    Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall image
On County Rd 8, about 10 miles north of Florence and just off of the Natchez Trace, is a remarkable tribute to an amazing feat. Nothing big or flashy, just a low dry stone wall (ie no mortar) that runs for over a mile and was made by one man to honor his great, great grandmother's return home after being forced to travel the "Trail of Tears". Definitely worth the detour! The entrance is a private driveway so do not park there but rather across the road. See more..

    - Use a trail map
    Hiking Trails
    Rainbow Mountain Trails image
We stopped in Madison, Alabama to break up the drive going to Destin, Florida. We stayed at the airport Hampton Inn which was very nice. Then we drove to the Rainbow Trails to hike. We went on the trail leading to the balance rock. We came upon that formation in 5-10 minutes and it was very nice. Then we kept walking and as dusk was just starting we realized we were lost. We were told that wouldn’t happen so we didn’t take a trail map. We should have at least taken a picture of the trail map that was at the beginning of the trail. We saw no signs that pointed us back in the direction of the parking lot. Finally we took out our phones and used google maps. Finally found our way back!! Little exciting but lesson learned. My BFF and I visited this garden on our way through Dothan. WEAR BUG SPRAY!! Other than the bugs flying in your ears and eyes, the gardens were spacious and beautifully maintained. As someone with OCD, these were fantastic. Thank you for having everything clearly marked and labeled. What we really enjoyed and had no idea existed was the lock gates. Both of hurried to FaceTime our husband's to show this part of the garden. It's a fantastic idea. See more..

  29. 4.5 Maple Hill Cemetery (80 reviews)
    - Historical walking pleasure
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Cemeteries
    Maple Hill Cemetery image
I live across the street from Maple Hill Cemetery, which has a sign saying it is the oldest continuously operating municipal cemetery in the Southeast. Because it's so convenient, I walk there every morning, very early to miss the mowers and blowers who are always at work by 7:15 keeping this beautifully landscaped cemetery in pristine condition. Five Alabama governors are buried in the oldest part of the cemetery, as well as Alabama U.S. Senator John Sparkman and Tallulah Bankhead's mother (Tallu was born in Huntsville). Many of the gravestones have photographs or interesting designs, and some have special plantings. Even though I've been walking there since 1988, I still find things I had never seen before. My only regret is that they don't permit dogs. There used to be a lot more walkers there when they did, and I never once saw unscooped poop. See more..

    Daphne Bayfront Park image
The park was small, but clean and well kept and with ample parking. It has a panoramic view of Mobile Bay and is a great place to watch the sun sink onto the water. It is not a great place to swim, but you can get your feet wet and splash around a while. The boardwalk provides an opportunity to get close up with the flora of the bay's eastern shore. Just don't try to drive into the park during the high traffic times for the multiple nearby schools. See more..

Played Azalea Course while staying across the street at The Grand Hotel. Took advantage of the twilight rate which starts at a generously early time, a very fair price for this course. - Operated by Auburn University
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM Art Museums
Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art image
I visit this treasure of a museum every time I'm in Auburn. I've been here at different time to capture it's beauty and also attended an evening event a few months ago. The Jule Collins Smith is not large, so it allows you to take your time walking the galleries. Upon entering look up at the Chantilly chandelier in the lobby. Admission is free, however a donation of $5 is a suggestion. There is a gift shop and cafe up front. Visitors can see unique wood art known to the area as "wood turning". A special collection from the 1930's Alabama state fair stored for 70 years was displayed during my visit. The museum is owned and operated in conjunction with Auburn University. If you have and hour or so I would recommend a tour. Although the museum closes in the late afternoon its lighting in the evening is spectacular. See more..

    Moton Field image
The other Reviewers have done a great job covering the museum and we greatly appreciated their time and effort. Instead of repeating what they have said I’d like to offer a “tip” on parking. The main (marked) parking up on the hill above the airport/museum and is a bit of a hike, especially if you have mobility issues. (if you are traveling with kids that need to burn off some extra energy after a long car ride, it’s great). There is a second (unsigned) parking area for about 20-30 cars that is directly adjacent to the museum hangers. To get to this parking take General Benjamin O Davis Way towards the airport terminal and at the end on the right, you’ll come to the two hangers that house the museum and the parking is in front of first hanger. Hopes this helps! See more..

Cahawba was once Alabama's state capital (1819-1826) and a thriving antebellum river town. It became a ghost town shortly after the Civil War. Today it is an important archaeological site and a place of picturesque ruins. Nature has reclaimed much of Old Cahawba, but historians and archaeologists from the Alabama Historical Commission are working hard to uncover Cahawba's historic past and to create a full time interpretive park. Horseshoe Bend National Military Park image
What a story told at Horseshoe Bend Battlefield. The Visitors Center/museum doesn't hold anything back when telling the good and bad of this time period and in particular the battle that took place here. The ranger gave me a pamphlet with a map of the park. There is a 20-minute video you can watch and a small museum to get a bit more context before going on the driving tour. Each stop has a cell phone message that provides additional information for those who don't want to watch the video. This is free and worth taking the trek. See more..

So much fun! A blast from the past. Well worth the drive from Huntsville. It was like walking back in time as everything is kept in repair, has a well-appointed layout, and has unique products that are things you would want. We love picking out candy from the bin, getting old-fashioned sodas, and picking out amazing chocolate confections from the case. I love the vinyl Southern sayings stickers and Tshirts. What a great place to spend an afternoon! They even have a seating area with checkers and a former soda fountain type stool area where we could eat all of our fun finds. Well worth the drive. We’ll be back. They’re also right across the street from a pizza place. See more..
