  6. 4.5 Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art (76 reviews)
    - Operated by Auburn University
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Art Museums
Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art image
I visit this treasure of a museum every time I'm in Auburn. I've been here at different time to capture it's beauty and also attended an evening event a few months ago. The Jule Collins Smith is not large, so it allows you to take your time walking the galleries. Upon entering look up at the Chantilly chandelier in the lobby. Admission is free, however a donation of $5 is a suggestion. There is a gift shop and cafe up front. Visitors can see unique wood art known to the area as "wood turning". A special collection from the 1930's Alabama state fair stored for 70 years was displayed during my visit. The museum is owned and operated in conjunction with Auburn University. If you have and hour or so I would recommend a tour. Although the museum closes in the late afternoon its lighting in the evening is spectacular. See more..

Built in 1819 (the same year Alabama became a state) the home is not only a source of fine 19th Century furnishings and Federal style architecture but is also the home of poet and artist Maria Howard Weeden. Howard Weeden was born in the house in 1846. Except for the Civil War years when Federal officers occupied the home, Howard spent her entire life in the home. She is known as being one of the first artists to paint African Americans true to life during the years following the Civil War. Guests enjoy a guided history tour which transports them to a bygone era learning about architecture, Weeden art and life in the Antebellum South. Since the home is furnished with antiques and original art, tours are guided tours and last around an hour. Tours are offered twice a day, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 11AM and 1 PM to 2PM or by appointment. Please refer to the website for specific closed dates as the museum is also an event venue and is closed on dates that those events occur. See more..
  9. 3.5 The American Sport Art Museum & Archives (11 reviews)
    - Quirky
    Art Museums
The American Sport Art Museum & Archives image
We didn't know what to expect; Sports Art of course but that's a pretty broad category. We enjoyed our free visit largely due to the Librarian (whose name I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember) there that day. She gave us an essentially private tour of the Library and of the many side rooms. Really brought the collection to life. Spread out over two floors, there are many rooms to visit and some you can't. There seems to be a little of everything. Lots of Olympics memorabilia. For example: a full set of the artist's rendering of the 2008 Beijing Olympics facility signs. see photo Only negative is that there could be a lot more signage for context. Free admission and free parking. See more..
