  1. 4.5 Helen Keller Birthplace (164 reviews)
    - One of History’s Most Inspiring Stories
Saturday: 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Theatre & Performances
    Helen Keller Birthplace image
Because of the play and movie “The Miracle Worker” most people know the story of Helen Keller. What a treat it was for me to visit Ivy Green, the birthplace of one of history’s most inspiring stories! The staff is wonderful. They offer a personalized tour of the downstairs (no extra charge) or you can walk through the house yourself. The house is furnished with 85% original items (including what the guide called a “fainting couch,” a place for ladies to collapse from the hot Alabama summer days). Keller’s story is so widely known that there wasn’t much for the guides to add; however, they do know their history well. They’re also familiar with anecdotal facts (such as the story behind the creation of Braille). The stop was well worth my time, and I would be more than happy to visit again. See more..

    - The Good That Is Florence...In One Place
    Theatre & Performances
    First Fridays image
First Fridays (the first Friday (duh) of the month March - December ,5 - 8PM "officially"), is all that makes this town a great place to be concentrated along Court Street in downtown Florence. Local artisans and entertainers line the streets, selling their wares, performing, or just passing the time with you. Shops stay open later, restaurants stay open even later, and great people watching abound! The local music scene is well represented from the excellent street musicians to those performing in the restaurants. The stage on Mobile Plaza headlines top local music covering most all genres ( and Florence IS a great place for local music!). A do not miss if you are in the area .... See more..

The place looks very new and was very clean. The theater was large and had a great sound. The staff was outstanding as well. Friendly and accommodating. Parking was so easy and was free! The Ritz Theatre opened on July 4, 1928, with Wallace Beery in “We’re In The Navy.” It was first located next door to its current site and spent its first five years as a nickelodeon.
