Any description of the exhibits would not do it justice. You have to experience it to get it. It seems like a hidden gem. Anniston should feel so lucky to have such a wonderful museum. And the cost to enter is inexpensive. We bought the AM&G Passport ticket, to gain entrance to both museums. I am so glad we visited, and I would visit again. See more..

    Lowndes County Interpretive Center image
We were driving from Montgomery to Selma and needed a rest stop. Saw the signs for this interpretive center run by the National Parks and pulled over. What an incredibly well done interactive exhibit. You start off with a 25 minute film that is so informative and well done about the historic walk from Selma to Montgomery. When the film is over the side door opens that welcomes you into the exhibit. Lots of information and hands on exhibits. The walls are filled with quotes, the sculptures are striking and life sized, there was even an exhibit that replicated the inside of one of the tents in the tent cities set up along the walk. If you can handle the Alabama heat there is also a large outdoor walking path that simulates the tent city as well. It was 100° and we are from the north so we couldn’t handle it!! The parks official that was on site was very welcoming and knowledgeable. See more..

    Negro Southern League Museum image
We are doing college tour visits in & around the South and found ourselves with half of a day to further explore the city of Birmingham. We first tried to go to Birmingham Civil Rights Institute but we couldn’t buy tickets online, the last box office tickets sold at 1:45: place closed at 3. Then we tried to go to Arlington Antebellum home but it’s more of a house and garden tour vs. a true plantation so that got nixed. Then tried to go to the Birmingham Zoo but it was closed. We found ourselves at the Negro Southern League Museum which was perfect! It combined our desire to see more about civil rights in this town + our love of baseball. It’s also situated right next to Regions Field where the Birmingham Barons play and where we were headed for an evening game. We highly recommend this attraction! See more..

The American Village builds good citizens on the cornerstone of liberty. The American Village is a nationally-pioneering classroom and American history and civics education center that engages and inspires 35,000-40,000 students annually from Alabama and Southeastern states in experience-based academic programs related to American history, civics and government. Students “step into history” and discover the power and drama of America’s journey for independence, liberty, and self-government. The American Village is embarked on a journey to expand the number of students served on-campus to 100,000 each year, drawing school and youth groups from throughout the Nation. On the cornerstone of liberty, the American Village educates and inspires young people to: Know America’s history — the stories of our country’s legacy of liberty and those in every generation who have secured it Cherish the ideals of liberty — the founding principles on which our Nation, the Constitution, institutions of American self-government, and our civic responsibilities are based Serve our country as good citizens and leaders — all as stewards of liberty Remembering the Price of Liberty The timeless lesson of liberty is that freedom is not free. The American Village tells the compelling stories of not only America’s legacy of liberty, but of those in every generation who have served and sacrificed for that cause. Adjoining the hallowed ground of the Alabama National Cemetary, which will become the final resting place for almost 200,000 veterans, the American Village has been designated by public law as the Veterans Living Legacy. This campus is dedicated to honoring America’s veterans and their service and sacrifice for the cause of liberty. The American Village is preparing to engage and inspire 150,000 visitors each year to remember and honor our veterans and active military. The National Veterans Shrine uses multimedia to engage visitors in the stories of liberty and sacrifice, from generat... See more..

  44. 4.0 Alabama Museum of Natural History (5 reviews)
    - Loved it! Great for those wanting an easy to digest course in geology

This small, but focused museum is absolutely worth your time. Reading the labels offered a straightforward, crash course in geology. It also contained some interesting locally sourced fossils. Example: a 60 foot Basilosaurus (toothed whale ancestor) hung from the ceiling. There were many touchable items like trilobites and a mammoth tooth. While clearly meant for children, I touched each and every one. A glass beehive offered a glimpse into their working lives (workers entered and exited via a transparent plastic tube). Apparently, honey bees reach adulthood in 16-24 days. Honey collected onsite is available for sale in the gift shop as well as a good selection of introductory geology books. See more..

Our group visited Fort Mims recently. This site is so very important to Alabama history. Fort Mims, site of the massacre on August 30, 1813, is a somber memorial to almost 550 settlers and militiamen who lost their lives at the hands of the Red Sticks. There is no charge to visit the fort site. We also visited the local museum in nearby Stockton, and enjoyed lunch at the Stagecoach Cafe. See more..
