  1. 5.0 National Memorial for Peace and Justice (536 reviews)
    - Hits like a punch in your stomach

National Memorial for Peace and Justice image
I visited many important sites from the civil rights movement during this recent trip through Atlanta, Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery. None had as much an impact as my visit to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. The layout is very simple, but so powerful. As you enter you pass through the 816 columns (each representing a county where a racial lynching was recorded). 816 counties in 32 states as I was told while here. The first columns are at ground level, just like tombstones. As you move through the museum, the columns are gradually raised, until the end where they are high off the ground, as lynched bodies would appear. Outside there is a second set of columns, which I believe are laid out to represent coffins. I spent about 2 hours here and the $5 admission (yes, only $5) includes entry into to the nearby Legacy Museum, which was almost as important. I will definitely visit again the next time I am here. Civil Rights Memorial image
The names of 40 people killed in the battle for civil rights between 1954, when the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed segregation, and 1968, the year of the assassination of Martin Luther King, are embedded forever in this round, flat, granite sculpture. Water flows gently over the surface of the inspiring memorial, designed by Maya Lin, who also created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. See more..

    Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall image
On County Rd 8, about 10 miles north of Florence and just off of the Natchez Trace, is a remarkable tribute to an amazing feat. Nothing big or flashy, just a low dry stone wall (ie no mortar) that runs for over a mile and was made by one man to honor his great, great grandmother's return home after being forced to travel the "Trail of Tears". Definitely worth the detour! The entrance is a private driveway so do not park there but rather across the road. See more..
  7. 4.0 Bamahenge (58 reviews)
    - Worth a Visit

    Bamahenge image
OK you could say I am a groupie since I’ve been to the real Stonehenge in England, and I’ve also been to FoamHenge in Virginia. It’s only logical that I would come here too. It’s a great place to go for a walk. Although it’s kind of off the beaten track from any place. Plenty of areas to park and you just start walking. You’ll see almost full-size dinosaurs partially hidden in the woods. I guess we missed the big giant spider and the brontosaurus. I think everything‘s made out of fiberglass with a wood infrastructure. There is no cost and there really aren’t any directional signs. You’ll see a car parked on the side of the road and that’s where you know to go. It is a partial representation of Stonehedge. Nowhere near the size. But it’s free and it’s close and it’s great exercise so just do it. See more..

    Magnolia Cemetery image
Have never been so touched by any cemetery such as this, due to the incredible amount of time it must have taken to list so many thousand names of Confederates lost to battle. Also, some of the most elaborately carved statues and crypts I've ever seen. Peak holes allow visitors to see historic family memorbilia left inside the crypts...fascinating look into the past. Well worth the time to visit. See more..

    Clanton Peach Water Tower image
This would have to be one of the best water towers that has been made to look like something/an object that I have seen. The shape and the paint job are excellent. Clanton should be proud!!! It is actually located at 86 Peach Tower Rd but you can also see it from the vacant lot at 2795 Lay Dam Rd or from Headley's Big Peach farmer's market next door at 2675 Lay Dam Rd, Clanton. Don't look for it on 7th Street South as it isn't there. See more..

I go here often, I live just a couple of minutes from it. Very well done and really hits home. There are picnic tables and restrooms right behind the park. The detail of the bronze statue is amazing. We lost one of my high school classmates in Iraq - it was nice to see a brick there dedicated to him. They've recently updated the park, I need to go back. 16. 4.0 Winston County Courthouse (1 review)
    - Great look at early history of Winston County--some very interesting facts
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
Winston County Courthouse was built in 1894 of the local sand rock (which helped to fireproof the building, the jail, and the records maintained there). Done in classic revival style, it is an imposing landmark in the town's central square. Walking through the halls of the courthouse is a neat experience as you realize the history that has been witnessed by this building. In the square (just opposite the front of the building), there is a memorial honoring the history of Winston County in the Civil War. During the Civil War, Winston County--being an extremely rural with a population consisting heavily of local farmers--seceded from the State of Alabama. The county formed the "Free State of Winston" and refused to provide men or funds to the Confederacy for a war of which the locals did not consider themselves to be part. Of course, surrounding counties and the state raided the "Free State of Winston" mercilessly and attempted to conscript local men into Confederate units (and some succeeded). By the end of the war, the area had been decimated in the internecine fighting and had a difficult time rebuilding. The memorial is to the men who fought on both sides of the Civil War from the county. Also, the sand rock used to build the courthouse is apparently a local rock (I got an earful about how abundant it is locally) and it was used in the construction of several of the older buildings downtown. The courthouse and town square (the town bank is across the square from the courthouse) are definitely worth a stop and look around if you are in the area and like learning about local history. The people are ridiculously friendly as well--definitely southern hospitality. (If you want to know more about the courthouse, you can visit their website on facebook--https://www.facebook.com/pages/Winston-County-Courthouse/108611012497095). See more..
