Alabama Wildlife Center is Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation facility, caring annually for almost 2,000 wild bird patients from more than 100 species. AWC is a nonprofit organization with a dual mission: (1) to provide medical and rehabilitative care for Alabama’s injured and orphaned native birds in order to permit their return to the wild, and (2) to educate people in order to heighten awareness and appreciation of Alabama’s native wildlife. Founded in 1977 as a small, home-based, all-volunteer organization, the Alabama Wildlife Center has grown to be Alabama’s largest wildlife rehabilitation center and a leader in the rehabilitation of wild birds. Some of the methods developed here are now used in rehab facilities all over the world. Since AWC's inception, well over 50,000 native Alabama wild animals have been helped because of the center's efforts. The organization has been in continuous service 365 days a year for over 30 years. Free with paid admission to OMSP See more..

Heard that Wade Ward Nature Park can have some birds. Hard place to find parking for, but I figured that the Diner didn't mind an extra vehicle.. Nice raised 1/3 mile round trip board walk over some wet lands and marshes. This afternoon we saw only a couple of Pelicans and some ducks and some small birds that I am still not sure of. If you walk it at a leisurely pace maybe a half hour, so if in the area and can find parking do the walk !!~ See more..

I went on a couple jogs between the Pier and the Grand Hotel while in town. This is a wide paved walkway that extends for many miles, great for walkers (and their dogs), bikes, and running. It's right along the road, so there will be some cars whizzing by, for those who are a bit nervous of such things. But I loved it! See more..

  5. 4.0 Beeswax Creek Park (1 review)
    - Hidden bit of quiet access to the river
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Piers & Boardwalks • Scenic Walking Areas
3 public viewing/fishing piers, several pavilions with picnic tables, playground equipment, and restrooms. Public boat launch also available just outside of the park. Long walking trails for birding and nature viewing plus two primitive campsites reachable by canoe. Good for birding and they are planting what looks to be a deer field so that should draw even more wildlife in for easy viewing. See more..
  6. 5.0 River Walk, And Amphitheatre (1 review)
    - Fishing, walking, right on the river
Arenas & Stadiums • Educational sites • Scenic Walking Areas
Free and Fun! This hidden area of the Chattahoochee, is directly across from Columbus RiverWalk Park. Cross the bridge on food, drive or rent a bike and come on over. Parking is free. Amphitheatre doesn't have enough events, but a nice place to have them. The real gem is if parking is packed at Columbus side of the river, come on over for free parking, and get right down on the water at the Chattahoochee. Pay attention to the water rise when the dam upstream is opened but the fishing is great. Walking or bike paths are wide and clean. Bench seats and grass areas for picnics. Plenty of shade. NO Amenities- bring your own water and snacks. Rent a bike across the river at Ride On Bikes and enjoy the Alabama side with a safe bike lane crossing the bridge. Scenic and quiet. It is right behind the county office building, and usually has safe police presence. Great for kids and to enjoy the outdoors. Look for fish, geese, and wildlife, maybe even a bald eagle. Think of it as a quiet, safe, trailhead for free adventures. See more..
