    - Lovely Hike
Saturday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM State Parks
    Monte Sano State Park image
Went hiking here a few days ago with my 7 and 10 year old. Admission is $5 for over 12 years old, and $2 for under 12. We hiked the Northern Loop Trail (1.9 miles), and the Southern Loop Trail (3.4 miles). Both trails were easy and relatively flat. There's a playground, and you can get a map at the office. The rest room by the office was clean enough. You can exit the park, and come back in the same day as long as you keep your receipt. There were more challenging trails, but I didn't want to overwhelm the kids. The trails we hiked were marked well, so it was easy to stay on the right path. Would love to visit again when in the Huntsville area. See more..
  9. 4.5 Oak Mountain State Park (426 reviews)
    - A good stay overall
    State Parks • Biking Trails
    Oak Mountain State Park image
From a camping standpoint, the park was shady and quiet for the most part. Some rv spots are a little cramped but we made due with a 32’ trailer. Park personnel are constantly circulating and everyone entering the campground is stopped and verified. They are in the middle of new construction at one of the beaches and it looks like it will be a really nice addition when finished. Firewood and propane, as well as a very few snack items are available at the campground store. When quiet time hits after dark, it’s definitely quiet so you can sleep well. A very good stay, just needed a little more room at our lot. See more..

I loved this park. I drove by it during the day and I didn't think about it much. I'm not from the area but it seemed to be in the not best part of town. I went later in the evening with my mother to go for a walk and we loved it. It is very large and there was a great amount of people doing all sorts of things. Lots of people having fun with their friends. The park lights up at night in a great manner that makes it all very beautiful. See more..

We parked (50 cents/hour) across the 1963 City Hall and joined many others to walk the 1 mile circuit around this park to include its canal. The enclosed 12.5 acres is beautifully manicured with the Museum of Art sitting prominently over the 2 large pools with fountains. They are bordered with Japanese cherry trees and filled with large grey Grass carp and colorful Koi best seen from the Japanese Bridge donated in 1977. I was bringing my brother, Tom, down to our Florida home for a fishing tournament, and first hotel choices were all booked, what a great mistake. We drove about 33 miles more to Clanton and Holiday Inn staff told us to try this place, and we did. The BBQ here was top notch and I have judged BBQ in Illinois fests. Save room for the desserts they offer too. I tried the peach cobbler with peach ice cream and my brother had Peach cheesecake ice cream and he said it was amazing. See more..

    Desoto Falls image
These falls were so nice and pretty to look at. The rocky area is a little hard to navigate, but that can be expected. The stairway leading towards the falls has some nice colored glass affixed to each step, which adds a bit of eclectic art. There are some picnic tables about which were in use by families. There are also some hiking trails that you can get lost in for a short period of time. Overall, a pretty waterfall. See more..

  27. 4.0 Lakepoint Resort State Park (150 reviews)
    - Loose dogs???

    Lakepoint Resort State Park image
We love this campground. The views are great. The sites are spacious (especially 52). The showers need some updating and possibly security locks. Anyone could walk in from the campground while your in either bathroom/bathhouse. The campground is secured with a key pad and gate which is nice. My main complaint is having a 18mo old toddler who loves to play outside and dealing with 2 random “stray” dogs. They just showed up each day and would approach us and how would you feel with random dogs approaching your child? Im not happy. I called the campground and NOTHING was done. Some other campers said “they live on the hill and just come down to hang out”. They need to stay on their hill. See more..

    Indian Shell Mound Park image
Shell Mound is one of those ancient places that we may never completely understand. There are about 8 mounds you can make out, but the ground is littered all over with oyster shells. The largest mound was tested and found to be at least 800 years old. There are layers of charcoal , shell, fish and between the seasons, Mother Nature reclaims the sight. Meal after meal for 800 years have built the mounds. The area is only 11 acres but plants grow there from as far away as the Appalachians and the Yucatan, Mexico. The locals can hear flute music and soft drums from time to time. The Oaks are old and wise as well. One is believed to be older than the mounds. She has seen all that has gone before. People see faces of the Old Ones in pictures taken of the tree. It is a place that demands respect. See more..

    Moundville Archaeological Park image
Called "The Big Apple of the 14th Century" by National Geographic, Moundville Archaeological Park was once the site of a powerful prehistoric community that, at its peak, was America's largest city north of Mexico. Located on the Black Warrior River 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa, the park preserves 326 acres where, 800 years ago, Mississippian Indians constructed 28 massive flat-topped earthen pyramids, arranged carefully around a vast central plaza. The mounds served as elevated platforms for civic and ceremonial structures and the homes of nobles. Today, the panoramic landscape provides stunning views of these ancient monuments while the park's museum displays many of the beautiful treasures that have been unearthed at the site. A campground with modern amenities and a conference center available for private function rentals compliment this historically and culturally significant site. See more..
  39. 4.0 Russell Cave National Monument (105 reviews)
    - Short aerobic trail + a cave
    National Parks
    Russell Cave National Monument image
The highlight of the Russel Cave monument is not the cave, it's the very short and very steep trail, which started as a blacktop paved trail (though now well populated by massy material that is slick when wet.) The trail was filled with wildflowers and other emerging spring growth. Although only a mile and a quarter overall, it gains 400 feet, making it a nice little aerobic addition to the day. It was not far out of our way after leaving Chattanooga, and we thought it was worth the trip. THe cave is pretty cool too, but as noted, is not explorable by the general public. See more..

There are numerous interpretive & educational areas, ponds complete with fish and turtles, benches, assessible docks, and on the water gazebos, etc. The public restroom was very clean and also assessible. They also have a beautiful veteran memorial located at the main entrance. We were very impressed by the number of people who were visiting the park just for the walking paths. It finally stopped raining enough for us to check out a curiosity in Montevallo, Al. Orr Park is described as the "Crown Jewel of Montevallo," a 40 acre city park bordering Shoal Creek and home of a collection of carved cedar trees. Some time back a storm ravaged the cedar trees along the river leaving many stripped bare of branches or shredded. A local coal miner with serious talent (Tim Tingle) began carving whimsical faces into the torn bark, and the results are delightful. The park boasts some playing fields and a playground, maybe a picnic table or two, but the most enchanting aspect is the stretch by the river where gnomes, dragons, wildlife, and monuments to Alabama and fallen military peep out from among the trees. It's a short stroll along the river - maybe a quarter mile, and there's an enormous open meadow if you're into kite flying, frisbee, or sunshine. See more..

Relics of Athens?..No TUSCALOOSA....The architect who designed the Capitoal also designed the University of Alabama and the University of Mississippi. The GOTHIC columns still stand with a portion of the lower floor. The day of my visit a wedding was being set up. White folding chairs were waiting for the bride and groom.I imagined the wedding party walking down the Capitol stone walk way, the bride walking toward her groom waiting at he 'alter' of historic ruins. It was a beautiful effect. Also, on a very hot August day, (same day)acar pulled up letting out 6 young children...walking among the relics imagining being in the Capitol100 years ago!... The park has a vast green lawn, benches to sit and enjoy the day, a gazebo to get out of the heat and beautiful shade trees. Its along side of University Boulevard. Worth a 10-15 minute stop to visit and enjoy the past of Tuscaloosa. RollTide! See more..
