Lovely Hike

Went hiking here a few days ago with my 7 and 10 year old. Admission is $5 for over 12 years old, and $2 for under 12. We hiked the Northern Loop Trail (1.9 miles), and the Southern Loop Trail (3.4 miles). Both trails were easy and relatively flat. There's a playground, and you can get a map at the office. The rest room by the office was clean enough. You can exit the park, and come back in the same day as long as you keep your receipt. There were more challenging trails, but I didn't want to overwhelm the kids. The trails we hiked were marked well, so it was easy to stay on the right path. Would love to visit again when in the Huntsville area.

    Enjoyed our visit, great location
We stayed five nights in cabin 6 at Monte Sano State Park last fall, and we absolutely loved it. Keep in mind that this is an old CCC cabin that could use a little love in a lot of ways, so if you're looking for a spotless place, this isn't it. We often split trips between camping and staying in a cabin, hotel, or B&B, so we were okay with it and found it reasonably priced for what you get. The cabin is outfitted with the basics for the kitchen, but we brought our own paper towels, cleaner, and such, as well as our own pillows and towels. The shower is a tight fit even for a petite person, so be prepared for that. We cooked steaks on the fire outside one night and would have used it more, but it was really windy a couple nights we were there, and we couldn't even keep our campfire going well those nights. I think most of the photos on the website are of cabin 6, and it seems to be the most secluded from the others, even though they aren't too far apart. At the cabin there is an overlook with a decent but not spectacular view, and we enjoyed coffee on the porch with this view in the mornings and the lights in the valley at night. We were thrilled to see deer just yards away from the cabin on a few occasions in the morning and at dusk, and deer were all over the place even during the day. I felt comfortable walking by myself quite a way from our cabin down the main road just before sunrise to get photos of deer looking for their morning meal. There is a main overlook that has a great view, and a lot of park visitors seem to visit that during the day. We hiked several trails and really enjoyed the Stone Cuts Trail the most, although my fear of heights kicked in at one point and caused a delay while I was trying to get the guts to go down a tricky ledge. The Japanese Garden was also cool. Staying at Monte Sano was a good compromise for us, because it gave us the feel of the outdoors and some benefits of our normal camping trips but without pitching a tent. It was also a good home base for our trips to eat some German food and to visit the space museum. We definitely plan to return again in the future but would like to see the cabins deep cleaned at least once a quarter, because it didn't seem to have been done in quite a while.

    Nice place
Stayed there three days and two nights. Camp ground was well shaded and had plenty of room for 30 foot camper. Electric work inside park limited spaced and swer hook up. Bathhouse was a little far but okay. Recent rain closed mountain bike trails for a day. When they opened. They were in good shape and well marked. Access road to state park was a residential street with no shoulders. Bigger RV might find it challenging. Japanese garden was well kept and nice. It was a nice park but we enjoyed Oak Mountain SP more.
