Oak Mountain State Park, Alabama, United States

4.5 (426 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Pelham State Parks • Biking Trails

A good stay overall

From a camping standpoint, the park was shady and quiet for the most part. Some rv spots are a little cramped but we made due with a 32’ trailer. Park personnel are constantly circulating and everyone entering the campground is stopped and verified. They are in the middle of new construction at one of the beaches and it looks like it will be a really nice addition when finished. Firewood and propane, as well as a very few snack items are available at the campground store. When quiet time hits after dark, it’s definitely quiet so you can sleep well. A very good stay, just needed a little more room at our lot.

Lovely - but bring your own firewood
We tent camped at Oak Mountain in October, 2020. We were on the A loop, site A59. The site met my expectations. We don't expect luxury, just basic amenities and a little distance between sites so there is some privacy. Note that ALL tent sites in the park are considered Walk-in. I could not determine that from looking at the map or any information online. It was fine, there were three of us and it was no big deal to carry our gear up the hill. The site was large, level, and had a metal fire ring and an old, but serviceable picnic table. There are some big roots about, so you have to be a little creative in where you pitch your tent. The bath houses are not the worst I've ever seen, but certainly not the best. They are very small, old and rusty and spidery. There is hot water and heat, and the toilets flush. Toilet tissue ran out by Saturday morning and was never replenished, so take you own. There is a $5 fee per person to enter the park, but if you tell them you are campers and show your reservation, you don't have to pay it. The folks at the camp store/office are nice, but the computer system is incredibly slow and it took forever to get checked in on a Friday afternoon. They gave us a free trail map to make up for the wait. The camp store only has the basics. Don't buy the firewood! Demand is so high that they can't keep enough dry wood in stock, and what they sell is green and WILL NOT BURN. We'll take a propane fire pit or our own wood next time. As for the rest of the park, it is without compare! There is so much to do, and the hiking trails are the best maintained and marked I have ever seen. Absolutely beautiful! There are tons of other activities, too, but we are hikers and did not do any of those. The kayakers seemed to be having a lovely time. It looked fun.
