4.5FORT MORGAN HISTORIC SITE(1.024 reviews)from $37.00 - Fun for history buffs!!! Saturday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Battlefields
Located on Mobile Point, at the end of Scenic Fort Morgan Peninsula, the site has a diverse number of activities to make your vacation a memorable one. Preceded by another fort, Fort Bowyer during the War of 1812, Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico, the fort played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864. Used intermittently through the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II, the site showcases the evolution of seacoast fortifications and adaptations made by the U.S. Army for the defense of the country.See more..

5.0National Memorial for Peace and Justice(536 reviews) - Hits like a punch in your stomach Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Monuments & Statues
I visited many important sites from the civil rights movement during this recent trip through Atlanta, Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery. None had as much an impact as my visit to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. The layout is very simple, but so powerful. As you enter you pass through the 816 columns (each representing a county where a racial lynching was recorded). 816 counties in 32 states as I was told while here. The first columns are at ground level, just like tombstones. As you move through the museum, the columns are gradually raised, until the end where they are high off the ground, as lynched bodies would appear. Outside there is a second set of columns, which I believe are laid out to represent coffins. I spent about 2 hours here and the $5 admission (yes, only $5) includes entry into to the nearby Legacy Museum, which was almost as important. I will definitely visit again the next time I am here.See more..

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., used the pulpit of this unassuming red brick church to lead the 1955-56 Montgomery bus boycott, which ignited the civil rights movement. Steeped in history, this church, where Dr. King served as pastor from 1954 to 1960, was also the site of many civil rights meetings during that era.See more..

4.5Frank Lloyd Wright's Rosenbaum House(394 reviews) - Worth the huge budget to restore this FLW house Saturday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Historic Sites
The Rosenbaums ended up spending twice their budget to build this home, but that's nothing compared to what it cost to restore it after Mrs. Rosenbaum donated it to the city of Florence. That cost TEN times their budget. We who really enjoy touring FLW homes, though, appreciate the time and money spent. This is typical FLW. One thing we didn't know was that Wright coined the term "carport" for the cantilever roof that juts out from the home - perfect to park a car under. The guides were great; they gave us a history at the beginning and then mostly let us wander and ask questions. By the way, the home is located in a great neighborhood, and while we went to Florence just to see this home, while you're in the area we also recommend Trowbridge's 1918 ice cream shop!See more..

I moved to the Mobile area 12 years ago. Oblivious to what Mobile Bay really was. I'm an outdoorsman and have been my whole life. This huge Area of Watershed: 44,582 square miles creates a tremendous estuary system supporting numerous species. 11 rivers lend water to Mobile Bay. This is a huge estuary system. One of the largest in the US. Species such as the Manatee, Bald Eagle, & Gulf Sturgeon are just a few species that use this area. We saw this on trip advisor, and decided to stop in. It is a house with about 6 rooms on first floor, in a residential neighborhood. It does have free parking. There are items, hanging on walls and on shelves throughout. The lady at the front desk was full of information, maybe even more than the museum itself. We did have trouble understanding her at times . We could, though, see she was very passionate about this place. Hopefully Hank Jr will visit it someday. See more..

I hiked Fort Toulouse early in the morning and was not disappointed. If you looked up tranquil in the dictionary I think they would put this site's picture there. First off, it is only $2 to have access to the site. There are several historic buildings here, including the fort. There are quite a few hiking trails that run parallel to the two rivers in the area. They are not difficult hikes and really scenic and calming. I went a day after a big rain storm so one of the trails was washed out but that did not diminish the experience. You can hike here, see history, camp, bring your RV. You can easily spend the whole day exploring. One of my favorite sites in the state.See more..

5.0Middle Bay Lighthouse(8 reviews) - Unique site, must visit by boat. Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lighthouses
We took a ride with Captain Tommy Rachel of Gulf Boat Tours to be able to visit this unique lighthouse which sits in the middle of Mobile Bay. The sturdy lighthouse has survived the years of weather with the exception of the light housing on top. The hexagon shaped lighthouse sits approximately 25' above the water on a metal frame with a dock at water level. The walls, door, dormer windows & catwalk, as well as the base of the light housing remain. History is that at one time lightkeepers wife had a child & a cow was brought to stay on the lighthouse when they needed milk for that child. Captain Rachel said the lightkeepers family were relatives of his family.See more..
4.0Pickens County Courthouse(5 reviews) - Cool story & visual! Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Mysterious Sites
The book, "13 Ghosts of Alabama" speaks about a permanent face in the upper window of the Pickens County Courthouse. The story is interesting & the ability to see the face is awesome. Keep in mind the window has been replaced many times & the face continues to reappear. (Cue Twilight Zone music). Not much else to do in Carrollton, Alabama, but do stop in at The Pizza Doctor for some of the best pizza on the planet. It's behind the courthouse on the circle. It may not look like much, but it's TOTALLY worth a stop in for fantastic pizza, cheese sticks (to die for), huge chef salad, and many more items. See more..
