Fun for history buffs!!!

Located on Mobile Point, at the end of Scenic Fort Morgan Peninsula, the site has a diverse number of activities to make your vacation a memorable one. Preceded by another fort, Fort Bowyer during the War of 1812, Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico, the fort played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864. Used intermittently through the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II, the site showcases the evolution of seacoast fortifications and adaptations made by the U.S. Army for the defense of the country.

    Too many bricks to count
We went to Fort Morgan after taking the Bay Ferry over and back. Upon approaching it a lady in a "guard" house came out to tell us admission would cost $8 per adult. There were 6 of us. The 1 veteran got in for free. No other discounts. We think they should have a sign posting their rates. We paid cash, got a receipt and a map/info booklet. We started by visiting the small museum near the main visitor parking lot. We entered the fort through its Postern Tunnel. The historic fort is huge and interesting but more than a little rough around its edges as similar age forts are concerned, such as Sumter and Pulaski on the Altlantic side. It appears the state of Alabama's Historical Commission that administers this 1800's vintage primarily brick fort is lacking the funds to complete some much needed restoration. Such a shame IOO. Some of its brick works are truly pieces of art constructed in its day. I feel we often tend to take so much for granted when viewing such amazing American history. 30 million bricks assembled centuries ago on a point of sand next to the Bay. Amazing place.

    Fun for history buffs!!!
We decided to take a break from the beach and pool for the day and head over to explore the Fort. We have two kids (8 and 15) who love history so it was fun to walk around the museum and learn about the fort and then go walk around the actual fort. Our son loved seeing the cannons and our daughter was looking for ghosts (don't worry, she didn't see any!) The steps up to the upper level are pretty steep so be aware if you have knee issues. On a side note, if you have Hamilton loving kids, there is a plaque marking the Fort as a stop on Lafayette's Tour! While the Fort is fun, it doesn't take too long to explore and the upper level isn't accessible to wheelchairs or strollers so it would be less to explore in those situations. Also, I would recommend going early in the day before it gets super hot. It was still cool and a nice break from the beach!
