We were in Orange Beach during chilly weather, so beach was less desirable. But the sun shone brightly & temps were just right for walking the trails. Others using the trails offered friendly greetings. Enjoyed the feeling of being in a natural environment. We stopped at the visitors center & got a map of the trails.See more..

4.5Johnny Henderson Park Trail(90 reviews) - Outdoor recreation, dog park, splash pad, playground Hiking Trails
Went for a walk here, stopped for photos of the military displays and to see the wildlife, mostly ducks (we also saw a rabbit). Nice mix of sun and shade. The large lake is nice. Dog park nearby and a splash pad/playground if you have dogs and/or children. Worth the short drive easily.See more..
We stopped in Madison, Alabama to break up the drive going to Destin, Florida. We stayed at the airport Hampton Inn which was very nice. Then we drove to the Rainbow Trails to hike. We went on the trail leading to the balance rock. We came upon that formation in 5-10 minutes and it was very nice. Then we kept walking and as dusk was just starting we realized we were lost. We were told that wouldn’t happen so we didn’t take a trail map. We should have at least taken a picture of the trail map that was at the beginning of the trail. We saw no signs that pointed us back in the direction of the parking lot. Finally we took out our phones and used google maps. Finally found our way back!! Little exciting but lesson learned.See more..
We road the Chief Ladiga trail from Jacksonville to the state line where it becomes the Silver Comet trail and on into Cedortown GA. The trail was great, wonderful scenery and only very slight inclines. We went to Cedortown spent the night then returned to Jacksonville the next day.It was a great ride both days.See more..
4.5Fort Morgan Road Trail(57 reviews) - Absolutely worth a visit Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
We visited on a weekday morning. As a family of four, we were offered a discounted family pack admission for $20. We started with museum. Under current COVID-19 restrictions, there are a limited number of people allowed in the small museum. We waited in line a few minutes (10-15) for this. I recommend visiting the museum first in order to have a better appreciation for what you will view in the fort. The history of the site is impressive, though much of it somber. My kids, ages 8 and 11, thoroughly enjoyed exploring the fort. We packed water bottles which were much needed in the summer heat.See more..

4.5Foscue Creek Park(29 reviews) - One of the best COE parks we have stayed at Saturday: 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Parks • Hiking Trails • Playgrounds
When traveling, we always look for a Corp of Engineers campground along our route. They are always some of the nicest places around. Nearly all of them could be destinations because of their scenery and layouts. Foscue really excels in this category. The sites are long and considerable space between them. A special here, is that nearly all of their sites are Full Hook-up. All the roads AND the campsites are paved. We had a nice deck, picnic table and fire pit. In touring the campground, it appeared that many of the sites were like ours. Nearly all the sites are shaded. Some are also satellite friendly.See more..

4.5Jeff Friend Trail(14 reviews) - Quiet Short Hike, GREAT Scenery Hiking Trails
This trail is the short trail in the Bon Secour NWR, and really delivers a lot of "bang for the buck". There is a pretty sizable parking lot and admission is free. This trail is easy to walk or hike and includes several benches to rest upon as you go your way around the trail. The trail includes wonderful deep woods views, as well as a marsh and the coastline of Little Lagoon. There is also a kayak/canoe launch as well. NOTE: There are no restrooms here so plan accordingly. Even at a very leisurely pace, you can hike or walk this trail in 30 minutes to an hour.See more..

5.0Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge(7 reviews) - Great Place to Relax Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
This is a lovely place to visit! My husband and I went last year but the water was real shallow. We went again this year and the water was up. The river is beautiful. It's a great place to bring your family, for teens, or adults to hang out! They also have some hiking trails, one leads to the over look. It's beautiful. We plan to go back once the Lily's are bloomed! I am super excited to seen them! I'm ready for the festival as well!! See more..
New additions were added since the last time we visited. They are a nice improvement and provide education about the area. The location is well kept and it’s clean. Views are pretty cool from just about any location, whether it be from on top of the rocks or from the top of the tower. Give yourself time to explore the area.See more..

3.0Bohemian Park(2 reviews) - Old fashioned fun Parks • Hiking Trails
This is an awesome local gem. We call it the watering hole. There’s a bend which makes this like a lazy River. A rope swing. Even a tiny beach! Nearby parking, bathroom and picnic tables make this a free fun activity. If you don’t believe in letting children get dirty this ain’t for you.See more..
4.0Stephens Gap(1 review) - Not for the faint of heart Nature & Wildlife Areas • Caverns & Caves • Hiking Trails I’m so glad we did this but I won’t pretend I wasn’t nervous or even a bit frightened at times. The hike isn’t long but it is more strenuous than I expected and entering through the ‘hikers entrance’ was basically caving over big slippery rocks. I enjoyed the scene once inside but that was also the shortest part of the experience. I went with my 65yo father and he just about did better than me! It was beautiful but plan ahead as it can be extremely dangerous. The trail could stand to have a few more markers but otherwise it’s nice how natural it is.See more..
4.0Neversink Pit(1 review) - Nice, moderate hike with a deep hole as the destination Hiking Trails
To hike legitimately, you need to register SCCi (Save Your Caves), which we did not find mentioned in any review before we arrived. Lots of reviews and web pages talking about it being one of the most photographed places in the state of Alabama, but after we parked, we noticed the sign (maybe most people don't pay attention?) which noted that you are trespassing if not registered. Fortunately a URL was provided (permits.scci.org) which our phone could access. It does not cost anything, and took only a couple of minutes to become "legitimate" hikers. Pay attention to the markers in the trees for the trail, or you may wander off it. We did not have the equipment to rappel into the 160+ feet deep hole, but it was fun to walk around and peer down into. About 500' elevation gain in 0.5 mile hike from parking area. It was a very pleasant late Autumn hike. Desire to return with equipment for a descent.See more..

4.0Piper Interpretive Trail(1 review) - Nice walking trail with overlooks of Cahaba River Spent < 1 hour Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
There is a gravel parking lot and information kiosk at the start of this trail. The Piper II is named for the old Piper Mine #2 and runs along an old railroad line that served the mine. The trail seems to be well maintained and is mostly easy walking. The beginning is a switch-back downhill and has hand rails; but the return hike is uphill. This part does not last long and it evens out into a nice walking path through the pines. It was a lovely hike. There were several benches along the way and interpretive signs about the local wildlife. We turned around and headed back after stopping at the first of two overlooks. The trail down to this overlook had not been cleared in a while and was a bit overgrown. The wooden platform looked out over the Cahaba River and the beautiful lilies that bloom mid-May until mid-June. There are no restroom facilities or food vendors available in this area.See more..
