Rainbow Mountain Trails, Alabama, United States

Use a trail map

We stopped in Madison, Alabama to break up the drive going to Destin, Florida. We stayed at the airport Hampton Inn which was very nice. Then we drove to the Rainbow Trails to hike. We went on the trail leading to the balance rock. We came upon that formation in 5-10 minutes and it was very nice. Then we kept walking and as dusk was just starting we realized we were lost. We were told that wouldn’t happen so we didn’t take a trail map. We should have at least taken a picture of the trail map that was at the beginning of the trail. We saw no signs that pointed us back in the direction of the parking lot. Finally we took out our phones and used google maps. Finally found our way back!! Little exciting but lesson learned.

    A Fun Discovery
We came to Rainbow Mountain Trails not knowing what to expect. We did parts of the trail and enjoyed the parts we did hike. We found the trails marked by name but we weren't prepared to do all the trails at that time. We look forward to coming back and being better prepared. There is a picnic pavilion and a small children's playground. There was ample parking on the day we were there. Disappointed to see so much trash and debris off trail along the Balance Rock trail. Looks like a large gathering had occurred off the trail recently.

    Beautiful mountain, very rocky trail
Rainbow loop, south, past Berry Trail, is not an easy hike. It is very rocky and somewhat steep causing you to have to really watch your step. This continues as it turns back North. we cut through Spring Trail to get back up quicker, although it was all rock and steep also. The mountain is beautiful but I wasn't expecting the entire trail to be so rough. I wouldn't take young children on this trail beyond Balance Rock.
