Smith Mountain Fire Tower, Alabama, United States

4.5 (6 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #1 in Jacksons Gap Hiking Trails

Nice little adventure

New additions were added since the last time we visited. They are a nice improvement and provide education about the area. The location is well kept and it’s clean. Views are pretty cool from just about any location, whether it be from on top of the rocks or from the top of the tower. Give yourself time to explore the area.

    Short hike, great payoff
A half mile walk gets you to the top of Smith Mountain and an 80 foot fire tower restored in 2012. There are numerous interpretive signs at the top for flora, fauna and geology as well as some picnic areas. There are also some exposed granite boulders that can be climbed. The fire tower has a 360 degree view of Lake Martin and the Tallapoosa county area. And there is good birding on the trails. Check out some of the other websites for details. Because rain was threatening we took the road up and back but you can take different hiking trails up and back. There is ample parking at the trailhead.

    Towering View of Lake Martin
You'll have to follow the signs to find it, but Smith Historical Fire Tower gives you a gorgeous vantage point for viewing the lake and wilderness. It's half a mile into the mountain and half out, with little difficulty; there will be brief, steep inclines, but it's manageable for anyone without a medical condition. I'm not exactly an engineer, but the tower gave all appearances of being safe and stable. Sunset's the best time to visit, as the water will set in the direction of the lake. It's not a long excursion, but that's part of the appeal; it's a quick attraction, leaving you happy without consuming your entire day.
