  3. 4.5 Monte Sano State Park (457 reviews)
    - Lovely Hike
Saturday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM State Parks
    Monte Sano State Park image
Went hiking here a few days ago with my 7 and 10 year old. Admission is $5 for over 12 years old, and $2 for under 12. We hiked the Northern Loop Trail (1.9 miles), and the Southern Loop Trail (3.4 miles). Both trails were easy and relatively flat. There's a playground, and you can get a map at the office. The rest room by the office was clean enough. You can exit the park, and come back in the same day as long as you keep your receipt. There were more challenging trails, but I didn't want to overwhelm the kids. The trails we hiked were marked well, so it was easy to stay on the right path. Would love to visit again when in the Huntsville area. See more..
  4. 4.5 Oak Mountain State Park (426 reviews)
    - A good stay overall
    State Parks • Biking Trails
    Oak Mountain State Park image
From a camping standpoint, the park was shady and quiet for the most part. Some rv spots are a little cramped but we made due with a 32’ trailer. Park personnel are constantly circulating and everyone entering the campground is stopped and verified. They are in the middle of new construction at one of the beaches and it looks like it will be a really nice addition when finished. Firewood and propane, as well as a very few snack items are available at the campground store. When quiet time hits after dark, it’s definitely quiet so you can sleep well. A very good stay, just needed a little more room at our lot. See more..

    - The Art of the Stairs

    Desoto Falls image
These falls were so nice and pretty to look at. The rocky area is a little hard to navigate, but that can be expected. The stairway leading towards the falls has some nice colored glass affixed to each step, which adds a bit of eclectic art. There are some picnic tables about which were in use by families. There are also some hiking trails that you can get lost in for a short period of time. Overall, a pretty waterfall. See more..

My wife and I camped in our RV at the campground in Lake Blakley state park and we loved it, very quiet and sited are spaced far enough apart to feel like you are secluded but not totally by yourself, the area is beautiful and wooded and has shady spots and just enough sun to enjoy the cool days outside the camper without being too cold. 12. 4.0 Lakepoint Resort State Park (150 reviews)
    - Loose dogs???
    State Parks
    Lakepoint Resort State Park image
We love this campground. The views are great. The sites are spacious (especially 52). The showers need some updating and possibly security locks. Anyone could walk in from the campground while your in either bathroom/bathhouse. The campground is secured with a key pad and gate which is nice. My main complaint is having a 18mo old toddler who loves to play outside and dealing with 2 random “stray” dogs. They just showed up each day and would approach us and how would you feel with random dogs approaching your child? Im not happy. I called the campground and NOTHING was done. Some other campers said “they live on the hill and just come down to hang out”. They need to stay on their hill. See more..

We spent Sunday-Thursday camping at the park. Our site was across from a waterfront site, which luckily was vacant and our view was not obstructed. The lake was clean and fun to swim. The bottom was not mushy or rocky, so it was comfortable to walk in the lake. The park has lots of amenities that are still closed because of Coronavirus, but we still had lots of fun! See more..
  17. 3.5 Indian Shell Mound Park (116 reviews)
    - Shell Mound is small, but the spirits are mighty.
    State Parks
    Indian Shell Mound Park image
Shell Mound is one of those ancient places that we may never completely understand. There are about 8 mounds you can make out, but the ground is littered all over with oyster shells. The largest mound was tested and found to be at least 800 years old. There are layers of charcoal , shell, fish and between the seasons, Mother Nature reclaims the sight. Meal after meal for 800 years have built the mounds. The area is only 11 acres but plants grow there from as far away as the Appalachians and the Yucatan, Mexico. The locals can hear flute music and soft drums from time to time. The Oaks are old and wise as well. One is believed to be older than the mounds. She has seen all that has gone before. People see faces of the Old Ones in pictures taken of the tree. It is a place that demands respect. See more..

Let me start by saying that I love this park. I love almost everything about it. My one exception is that I didn't have cell service in the cabin I stayed in overnight. However, that turned out to be a perk because it made me read and go outside to play! The park is not huge, but it is just right. Nice cabins for rentals. Nice, well-marked trails. Just lovely! Bladon Springs State Park image
This week I took my granddaughters, mother and step father to visit a place often visited by me as a child. It isn’t but about 25 miles from my Mom’s home. We haven’t been there in years but remembered it being run down the last time I was there about 22 years ago. What a pleasant surprise. The county now runs the park and has done a wonderful job cleaning it up and maintaining it. The springs now have a hand pump attached to them. The picnic pavilions are clean and very nice. There are nice playgrounds for children, very clean restrooms, nicely maintained grass, and a nice little campground. What a wonderful thing that Choctaw County has done! Thanks for keeping it open and bringing back memories from years ago. Such a quiet place and very well worth a visit! I will be going back again. Also, the historic church is beautiful! So are the historic homes around the historic district! Beautiful! See more..

    - What happened to this place
    State Parks
    Chattahoochee State Park image
We used to come to this park at least 3 times every summer to camp. We have noticed a decline in up keep the last 2 years but this last time was the worst. The bathrooms had not been cleaned in who knows how long. Spiders were so thick you couldn't even close the shower curtain. Once we got in the shower there wasn't a shower head. No toilet paper. That's just the men's bathroom. In the women's bathroom there was LITERAL feces spread on the stall knobs and doors. In addition to that, the lake water was so disgusting the kids didn't want to swim and the grass around the lake was so overgrown you couldn't stand at the edge to fish. As if that all isn't bad enough the management has other family living on the property setting off fireworks and generally being obnoxious. Needless to say, we cut this most recent trip short. I would not recommend this park under its current state or management. See more..

The registration building was closed so we just picked an empty site as we had a reservation. Our site was level and had the necessary hookups. It was a quiet spot by the edge of the river. Looking around, the campground appeared to need some sprucing up. We had a comfortable evening and met up with the ranger in the morning. Upon leaving we found picnic and boating areas also looking to be in need of repair. See more..
