4.5Maple Hill Cemetery(80 reviews) - Historical walking pleasure Points of Interest & Landmarks • Cemeteries
I live across the street from Maple Hill Cemetery, which has a sign saying it is the oldest continuously operating municipal cemetery in the Southeast. Because it's so convenient, I walk there every morning, very early to miss the mowers and blowers who are always at work by 7:15 keeping this beautifully landscaped cemetery in pristine condition. Five Alabama governors are buried in the oldest part of the cemetery, as well as Alabama U.S. Senator John Sparkman and Tallulah Bankhead's mother (Tallu was born in Huntsville). Many of the gravestones have photographs or interesting designs, and some have special plantings. Even though I've been walking there since 1988, I still find things I had never seen before. My only regret is that they don't permit dogs. There used to be a lot more walkers there when they did, and I never once saw unscooped poop.See more..
When we were in Selma, we called the office (http://www.selma-al.gov/cemetery/) to locate where one of my relatives grave was located. The staff was so kind and told me if I had a problem he would come over to show me the location. William Rufus King, a Vice President of the US is buried here with an interesting history of being sworn in out of the US and dying less than two months later.See more..
4.5Magnolia Cemetery(43 reviews) - Truly demonstrates the Confederates' Incredible sacrifice and loss Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Cemeteries • Mysterious Sites • Monuments & Statues • Educational sites
Have never been so touched by any cemetery such as this, due to the incredible amount of time it must have taken to list so many thousand names of Confederates lost to battle. Also, some of the most elaborately carved statues and crypts I've ever seen. Peak holes allow visitors to see historic family memorbilia left inside the crypts...fascinating look into the past. Well worth the time to visit.See more..

"Cemetery Stroll" type event at historic downtown Gadsden Forrest Cemetery. The stroll features role players standing at the graves of prominent and not-so-well known residents, recounting the stories of their colorful lives and the larger stories of Gadsden and Alabama. The event features about 50 characters each year, with some of them portrayed by descendants. Each character, dressed in period costume, tells his or her story in about five minutes, and spectators can wander throughout the cemetery to hear the stories. A program and map are provided to help visitors choose which characters to visit. Event is FREE but donations are encouraged.See more..
Old Fairview Cemetery is the go-to place for history or ancestory enthusiasts who want to research more about the historical figures and family members who shaped Eufaula as it is today. Notable families, such as the Shorters, Comers, etc. are buried here. Filled with incredible, huge marble statues and headstones representing the work of Italian stone cutters. Located on a bulff overlooking the river, it is a great place to reflect, enjoy nature and the gardens the people of Eufaula have carefully nurtured for all to enjoy. Me and my familiy all personally encountered a ghostly apparition on a visit there, so a great for you ghost hunters...just don't go at dusk, when they are most active.See more..
