Historical walking pleasure

I live across the street from Maple Hill Cemetery, which has a sign saying it is the oldest continuously operating municipal cemetery in the Southeast. Because it's so convenient, I walk there every morning, very early to miss the mowers and blowers who are always at work by 7:15 keeping this beautifully landscaped cemetery in pristine condition. Five Alabama governors are buried in the oldest part of the cemetery, as well as Alabama U.S. Senator John Sparkman and Tallulah Bankhead's mother (Tallu was born in Huntsville). Many of the gravestones have photographs or interesting designs, and some have special plantings. Even though I've been walking there since 1988, I still find things I had never seen before. My only regret is that they don't permit dogs. There used to be a lot more walkers there when they did, and I never once saw unscooped poop.

    Great historic cemetery!
I do love old cemeteries and often stop by interesting looking ones on motorcycle trips for a quiet place to stretch my legs. Maple Hill is large, peaceful, beautiful and historic. You could easily spend many hours on a comfortable day strolling among the markers and never get bored. There is just so much to see. There is a large section dedicated to Confederate soldiers which is really nice. One thing though, and I may be mistaken, but I don't remember there being any restroom facilities.... so plan ahead.

    Neat old cemetery in Huntsville
I enjoy strolling through old cemeteries for the beauty and tranquility. This one is no exception. There are Soldiers from the American Revolution on buried here, to include a selection of Civil War unknown Soldiers.
