I live across the street from Maple Hill Cemetery, which has a sign saying it is the oldest continuously operating municipal cemetery in the Southeast. Because it's so convenient, I walk there every morning, very early to miss the mowers and blowers who are always at work by 7:15 keeping this beautifully landscaped cemetery in pristine condition. Five Alabama governors are buried in the oldest part of the cemetery, as well as Alabama U.S. Senator John Sparkman and Tallulah Bankhead's mother (Tallu was born in Huntsville). Many of the gravestones have photographs or interesting designs, and some have special plantings. Even though I've been walking there since 1988, I still find things I had never seen before. My only regret is that they don't permit dogs. There used to be a lot more walkers there when they did, and I never once saw unscooped poop.See more..
