Step back into history

Old Fairview Cemetery is the go-to place for history or ancestory enthusiasts who want to research more about the historical figures and family members who shaped Eufaula as it is today. Notable families, such as the Shorters, Comers, etc. are buried here. Filled with incredible, huge marble statues and headstones representing the work of Italian stone cutters. Located on a bulff overlooking the river, it is a great place to reflect, enjoy nature and the gardens the people of Eufaula have carefully nurtured for all to enjoy. Me and my familiy all personally encountered a ghostly apparition on a visit there, so a great for you ghost hunters...just don't go at dusk, when they are most active.

    history lessons
History hasn't always been my favorite subject. I suppose that the closer you get to being history, the more interested you get. I've always found that a lot of information can be gleened from a walk through a cemetary. I am a country boy, and my parents were very religious people. When I was a kid, and when our family would visit realitivies on week-ends, we would find ourselves in various churches. While my parents were in church singing songs and listening to preaching, I would be a typical kid and sneek out and spend time in the cemetary, because there was nothing else to do. I was always interested in how many small graves there were, and how old these kids were when they died. I sometimes thought that maybe I should get myself back in church and get ready for my pending fate. This is a lovely cemerary, with a gazabo to enjoy the peacefulness of a quiet day. Most interesting was a set-aside section for Jewish citizens. We all know why they were set apart, but although I'm not Jewish, I like to think it was because they were speical. Maybe I'm just trying to pay back for those injustices, but I find them to be special. This is a big slice of history in a lovely historical town. It's well kept and a beautiful place to visit. I'm sure that none of the forever occupants will mind seeing a new face visiting there.

    A drive through history
We had some time while we were driving through Eufaula looking at homes to stop and see this old cemetery. Many stately obelisks, monuments, and family plots. Many are cared for well, but a few need TLC. A great view of the Chattahoochee River overlook. There are a couple of historical signs within.
