Wonderful cavern

Our family group of 7 enjoyed our tour. Morgan our tour guide was a very knowledgeable person who you could tell enjoys her job. We stayed at the RV sites for a couple of nights and the park has may interesting features to explore. Well worth the time go come and stay.

    Wonderful Christmas Displays
We traveled to the park specifically to see the holiday/Christmas displays. We went during a day tour when school resumed after the holidays so there wasn't a crowd (that was intentional). Arriving a little before our tour time, we were able to wander in the rocky/wooded area near the cave. The trail areas are beautiful. The cave entrance is up a bit of an incline, but easy to navigate. The decorating was truly wonderful and must have taken quite a while to put up! Lights, music, small scenes and guides along the way. The holiday tour does not include the entire normal distance - or steps. There are still quite a few steps that, for those with mobility issues, may be a little challenging. This particular tour was self guided with staff seated at a few points along the path. According to the staff, outside of the holiday season it is a fully guided tour.

    Rickwood Caverns
We stayed overnight at Rickwood. The gate is locked at sunset and we arrived after dark, but fortunately there was a number to call on the gate. The campground is small, but nice. The grounds were neat and there is a cute little covered bridge behind the campground. There is also a large swimming pool by the campground and we were shocked by how quickly the pool filled with people once it opened. There is a camp store / gift shop, but it is very small. The cave was okay. We've visited about 25 caves. If you've never been in a cave before, you will enjoy the tour. However, those that have toured caves before may be a little disappointed. (My husband was very unimpressed. I enjoyed the cave, but did have to agree that we have been to much better caves.) Most of the cave is dry. There are a few areas with the classic cave formations (some of which are sadly discolored by algae), but the majority is passages of rock which has the appearance of being worn away by water. Unfortunately, we were part of a rather large tour group. The size of the group was too large for this particular cave. (I doubt anyone at the back of the group heard half of what the guide said.) Our tour guide was also not very good. He didn't give much information about the cave (both in terms of history and geology), spoke far too softly, and wasn't well suited to be leading such a large group.
