Nice, moderate hike with a deep hole as the destination
To hike legitimately, you need to register SCCi (Save Your Caves), which we did not find mentioned in any review before we arrived. Lots of reviews and web pages talking about it being one of the most photographed places in the state of Alabama, but after we parked, we noticed the sign (maybe most people don't pay attention?) which noted that you are trespassing if not registered. Fortunately a URL was provided (permits.scci.org) which our phone could access. It does not cost anything, and took only a couple of minutes to become "legitimate" hikers. Pay attention to the markers in the trees for the trail, or you may wander off it. We did not have the equipment to rappel into the 160+ feet deep hole, but it was fun to walk around and peer down into. About 500' elevation gain in 0.5 mile hike from parking area. It was a very pleasant late Autumn hike. Desire to return with equipment for a descent.
