    National Treasure and Historic Experience
Currently open only on Friday and Saturday, I understand they are about to add additional days for the summer. This historic site dedicated to the Tuskegee Airmen and their famous Red Tail fighter planes is managed by the National Park Service. It’s basically a self guided tour but a ranger gives a brief introduction and then you can explore the two aircraft hangars that serve as the museum and gift shop. They do a great job of providing an interactive experience and really take you back in time with audio recordings and areas preserved or replicated just like they would have appeared during WWII. The day we were there power was out in the second hangar and so it was closed but I am not deducting from the rating for something that was beyond their control. Unfortunately this was where the P-51 fighter and movie theater were located, both of which I really wanted to see. We will definitely be back another time. Note there are other preserved buildings which are off limits and grounds to explore around the hangars, with additional informational signs. Adjacent is the still active small airport, Moton field. I would allow 2-3 hours to see everything, especially if you want to explore the grounds. Also, the site is just a short distance from I-85 and easy to get to. My recommendation to the Park Service is that they do a little more to promote this treasure from the Interstate with signage and, where appropriate fix up the entry area and outdoor signs. Until you are right there it looks almost abandoned. Again, the actual exhibits are outstanding! Also information online is not consistent in hours of operation for the public. Some people may be confused.

    Excellent History Lesson
I’m always on the lookout for a NPS place to visit and when I ended up staying in Newnan I decided to make the trip down. This is a great history lesson here because we weren’t taught anything about the Airmen in school as far as I can remember. I went on a weekday afternoon and had place almost to myself. There is no fee but they do have donation kiosks. The staff are very inviting, informative and friendly throughout. You can walk around and inside the two large hangars. There’s a lotta of reading to do as well as some audio stations which you use an old phone tom listen to. There are amazing displays and very informative videos detailing their work and what they had to deal with when returning home. Really worth a visit.
