Orr Maybe Something Different
It finally stopped raining enough for us to check out a curiosity in Montevallo, Al. Orr Park is described as the "Crown Jewel of Montevallo," a 40 acre city park bordering Shoal Creek and home of a collection of carved cedar trees. Some time back a storm ravaged the cedar trees along the river leaving many stripped bare of branches or shredded. A local coal miner with serious talent (Tim Tingle) began carving whimsical faces into the torn bark, and the results are delightful. The park boasts some playing fields and a playground, maybe a picnic table or two, but the most enchanting aspect is the stretch by the river where gnomes, dragons, wildlife, and monuments to Alabama and fallen military peep out from among the trees. It's a short stroll along the river - maybe a quarter mile, and there's an enormous open meadow if you're into kite flying, frisbee, or sunshine.

What a beautiful park for anyone to enjoy.
We visited because of a the description of the carvings of trees online. There are 30 uniquely carved trees to see on a lesurely walk about the park. There is also a creek that you can cool off in. Covered picnic tables and a large grassy park are so inviting for an family visit. Add to that the walking track around and through the carvings and it's a great place to relax.

Such an unusal place to visit!
Here are some of the faces you'll see. Squirrels, men, alligators, and even a dragon are carved on dead trees all around the park. Only dead trees expand this menagerie; living trees are left alone. Carvings are done by Tim Tingle
