Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall, Alabama, United States
4.5 (91 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Florence Monuments & Statues
Peaceful
On County Rd 8, about 10 miles north of Florence and just off of the Natchez Trace, is a remarkable tribute to an amazing feat. Nothing big or flashy, just a low dry stone wall (ie no mortar) that runs for over a mile and was made by one man to honor his great, great grandmother's return home after being forced to travel the "Trail of Tears". Definitely worth the detour! The entrance is a private driveway so do not park there but rather across the road.

This is an amazing place!
I visited here three times when Mr. Hendrix was still alive, and enjoyed each visit very much. He was always on hand to talk about the history of his great great grandmother and answer questions. On Friday, 9/4, my husband and I drove from north Alabama to Nashville and got on the Natchez Trace to drive the entire parkway. I wanted to introduce my husband to Mr. Hendrix's wall, and hopefully meet some of his family, but we missed it by about half an hour. I didn't know the hours of operation, but it closes at 4:00, and we arrived about 4:30. It's just off the Natchez Trace, easy to get to if you're driving on the parkway. I plan to make another trip soon, so my husband can see it from inside the fence.

An Impressive Wall
The story behind the wall makes seeing it even more impressive. I recommend this as a must see stop on the Natchez Trace. There not much to do other than walk the wall and parking is a little weird. Otherwise, it's a nice stop.
