While visiting Florence we stopped at Deibert Park. It is full of widely paved walking trails that have numerous paths throughout the large park which includes an abundance of large shade trees and plenty of places to rest. There are numerous interpretive & educational areas, ponds complete with fish and turtles, benches, assessible docks, and on the water gazebos, etc. The public restroom was very clean and also assessible. They also have a beautiful veteran memorial located at the main entrance. We were very impressed by the number of people who were visiting the park just for the walking paths. It is truly a beautifully designed and well maintained park with a wonderful storied history that dates back to 1875, as part of a large plantation. See more..

Local shop with local artists who serve to help you find the perfect gift! The young ladies were sweet as Southern sweet tea and showed us local handmade jewelry, soaps and their signature candles. Florence is very lucky to have a symphony that is as high caliber as the Shoals Symphony at UNA. The Shoals Symphony performs at various venues across town such as the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts and at local high schools. However, their primary location is Norton Auditorium at UNA. My family recently attended their yearly Disney Live performance. They showed the original "The Jungle Book" movie on a large screen while the orchestra played during the movie. It was fantastic and enjoyable for all ages! The Shoals Symphony at UNA performs one Disney Live show per year. They have already announced that "Ratatouille" will be the focus of their Disney Live performance next season. I've also been fortunate to see the Shoals Symphony perform for local school children during a field trip with my son. They feature many talented musicians. The Rosenbaums ended up spending twice their budget to build this home, but that's nothing compared to what it cost to restore it after Mrs. Rosenbaum donated it to the city of Florence. That cost TEN times their budget. We who really enjoy touring FLW homes, though, appreciate the time and money spent. This is typical FLW. One thing we didn't know was that Wright coined the term "carport" for the cantilever roof that juts out from the home - perfect to park a car under. The guides were great; they gave us a history at the beginning and then mostly let us wander and ask questions. By the way, the home is located in a great neighborhood, and while we went to Florence just to see this home, while you're in the area we also recommend Trowbridge's 1918 ice cream shop! See more..

This has to be one of the most beautiful campuses we have ever seen in the United States. We stopped at Jimmy Johns and they told us about the lion, so we meandered down that way. We arrived on campus and looked behind the fountain as directed and found this giant lion enclosure. What a Camus, what a campus. I’m not sure about the academics here, but it’s really a beautiful place. See more..

On County Rd 8, about 10 miles north of Florence and just off of the Natchez Trace, is a remarkable tribute to an amazing feat. Nothing big or flashy, just a low dry stone wall (ie no mortar) that runs for over a mile and was made by one man to honor his great, great grandmother's return home after being forced to travel the "Trail of Tears". We stayed at the Marriott hotel which is almost next to the park. We noticed lot of kids were in the splash pad, but had no idea it was a park. When we saw this park it was so nice! Wonderful old home in original condition, heart pine floors, matching fireplaces, full of antiques both from the home originally or donated. Dining in the cellar, but very nice and airy. It's especially nice and cozy at Christmas. Staffed by volunteers from the school, the Associated Women's Organization. They have some great cooks too and can accommodate fairly large groups. Though a small place, it was interesting to learn about the animals on site. It was also thought-provoking as it taught me something I did not know prior to visit. The entrance to the museum is $7 per adult and some may think it a little costly as you only get to see a short video and some Native American artifacts and read some story-boards. One does not need to visit the museum though to see the animals. There were 5 horses, about 8 sheep, and about 8 goats that one can see, though the sanctuary cares for almost 100 horses and bison as well. There is also a gift shop with genuine articles to purchase. Anything that one can do to help them out is a worthy cause. The girl we spoke to during our visit was friendly as well. See more..

This movie theater was recently purchased by AMC and renamed AMC Florence 12. The theater was originally built about 13 years ago by Carmike Cinemas. This movie theater features 3D and digital movies on large digital screens. It also offers stadium seating. AMC Florence 12 has been recently remodeled. They have the self serve drink machines now whereas the guests make their own drinks instead of the employees. My only problem with this is that after standing in line to purchase tickets, candy, and popcorn; you must stand in line again to pour your drink. This theater serves pizza, as well and also features the self serve butter stations for popcorn. AMC Florence 12 could be a little cleaner (like most theaters) but overall it is a good theater. Do yourself a favor and join the free AMC Stubs program to receive special offers such as $2 off tickets on Tuesdays and free refills on large popcorn. See more..
