A must see!!

We were driving from Montgomery to Selma and needed a rest stop. Saw the signs for this interpretive center run by the National Parks and pulled over. What an incredibly well done interactive exhibit. You start off with a 25 minute film that is so informative and well done about the historic walk from Selma to Montgomery. When the film is over the side door opens that welcomes you into the exhibit. Lots of information and hands on exhibits. The walls are filled with quotes, the sculptures are striking and life sized, there was even an exhibit that replicated the inside of one of the tents in the tent cities set up along the walk. If you can handle the Alabama heat there is also a large outdoor walking path that simulates the tent city as well. It was 100° and we are from the north so we couldn’t handle it!! The parks official that was on site was very welcoming and knowledgeable.

National Park Gem of Civil Rights History
The interpretative center is much more than a memorial to the tent cites that sprang up with the civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery. Their are several good exhibits highlighting the lives of those on the civil rights march, those who supported them, and those who opposed them. The statues of a couple of walkers is a highlight to the exhibits. The center is large, and has expansive grounds with several picnic table areas. The picnic are is in the tent city historic area and has several signs spread throughout.

    Incredible Civil Rights Interpretative Center
Everything about the Lowndes County Interpretative Center is terrific, from the architecture of the building itself (ask a ranger about that) to the exhibits inside. Kudos to the National Park Service for this very creative, informative, moving set of exhibits that are very user friendly for all ages. This is an example of the best of the National Park Service, and also a really informative venue even if you have been to civil rights venues in Montgomery or Birmingham.
