Ouch! This is incredibly moving as well as shaming....

the fact that people treated (and continue to treat) others who are just different fr/ them is downright absurd. This "museum" (more of an audio-visual experience) pounds that into you. The problem is that those who really need to understand what this place is trying to offer are the ones who will never step foot in the door.

    Historical Perspective
This wonderfully designed museum spans the African American experience from the beginnings of the slave trade, through the Civil War, Jim Crow era, the Civil Rights Movement and racism in the criminal "justice" system. Many mediums are utilized to make the history accessible. Such an important museum.

A New Must-Do, Especially for Children
Another place which everyone should visit so they can gain a fuller understanding of this subset of social issues which are overwhelming our country. The museum is sobering. It's a perfect mix of displays, multimedia and even interactive experiences. Small, but well worth one's time. A 15 minute walk away is their new Memorial to the victims of lynching in the US, mostly during the Jim Crow era. 801 stylistic tombstones, one for each county which had lynchings, are in another sobering display. To me, it was on a par with the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington. Be aware, however, of two considerations. First, entry to the museum is on a timed basis so it is best to get your tickets, and entry time, online although I had no problem after 4 PM buying a ticket and going right in. Second, parking is really hard to find. I couldn't find any nearby lot or garage so parked on the street in a space with a broken meter (fortunately, no ticket).
