Of course Covid-19, and the reasonable precautions needed to slow its spread, have obviated some of the services, the facility is still open, still doing its job, and still providing some fantastic birds-eye-views of the Duluth, MN and Superior, WI area. They also still have packets full of local travel information for visitors. Great facility. See more..
  3. 4.0 Ash River Visitor Center (66 reviews)
    - My Favorite Visitor Center at Voyageurs
    Visitor Centers
    Ash River Visitor Center image
The Ash River Visitor Center is probably the least visited of the three Voyageur National Park Visitor Centers. It is the furthest south and the farthest from population centers and main roads. It was a relatively small log structure with no formal museum area and only a small gift shop. The main room in the back is beautiful. Be sure to spend some time here relaxing and viewing the two video presentations in the small adjacent room. There are also a few displays to study. This center makes you feel like you are in the north woods. The ranger is friendly, knowledgeable, and makes you feel at home here. We visited on a rainy day and he was about to start a fire in the fireplace. This center is located on a hill and if you exit the back door, you will find some Adirondack chairs with a lovely view of the water. This may not be the biggest visitor center, but it was my favorite. See more..

  8. 4.5 Edge of the Wilderness Discovery Center (6 reviews)
    - A wonderful find
    Visitor Centers
We were driving along the Edge of the Wilderness State Scenic Byway when we came across the Discovery Centre. Not only was the centre an interesting and welcoming place but we learned about a 17.5 mile self-guided auto tour starting just up the road. It took us through the forest, sometimes on unpaved roads but always with wonderful views. The leaflet we picked up at the centre gave us lots of information and every so often there was a marker by the side of the road that matched the information in the leaflet. This was an unexpected and enjoyable side trip on our journey. See more..

    Embarrass Visitor Center image
Not on the beaten path for tourists, this little corner rest stop is both historical and hilarious. It features an authentic historical log cabin. Inside are displays, one whole corner is a Finnish sauna depiction. The rest of the building features newspaper articles and photos. Outside are restrooms, a mowed lawn and picnic tables. A nice shady place to take a break, enjoy some humor and have a picnic if you like. Note of history: The word "embarrass" was derived from the French word embarrasser, "to block" or "to obstruct", or figuratively, "to put one in a difficult situation". See more..
