  1. 4.5 Aiton Heights Fire Tower (35 reviews)
    - Great view, easy climb

    Aiton Heights Fire Tower image
It's a short, easy walk to the tower (warning, if you are out of shape, it's a little uphill to get there). The tower only allows for 6 people at a time, as that is all that will realistically fit at the top. The tower itself is much easier to climb than it looks, and the views are spectacular. If it's breezy, the tower will be in motion - if you are sensitive, heads up! See more..

    - Nice quick stop

    Father Baraga's Cross image
There are small but clear signs on 61 telling you where to turn for the cross. Head down the short road and park in the parking lot at the end. The cross is right behind the lot, impossible to miss! There's also a nice Rocky Beach in the same area so you can spend as little as five minutes to over an hour here, especially if you're looking for agates or just want to enjoy the view of the big lake. The cross has an interesting history as well. See more..
  3. 4.5 Brownsville Overlook (7 reviews)
    - Thousands of swans
Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Lookouts
We stopped by with my aunt and uncle who are avid outdoors people who live nearby. We were not disappointed. There were literally over 5000 birds on the water! Apparently they like to stop here on their way east before they turn south for the winter. It was a sight unlike any I've seen before. They have some free looking glasses available (like the one's you see on top of large buildings). Most people (us included) brought binoculars too. It was a fun stop on our day out with the kids. From US 61, go west on MN 60-W for about a mile or so. There is a pull off from the road to park your car and the view of Wabasha is amazing. I have been to Wabasha many times and never knew this existed. See more..
  5. 5.0 Skibo Vista Overlook (1 review)
    - Great stop south of Hoyt Lakes for a beautiful panoramic view.

    Skibo Vista Overlook image
I was doing a road trip in mid-September from the North Shore and around the countryside. I read about this vista and wanted to take a look. If you are ever driving along Highway 15 toward Hoyt Lakes, this would be a must stop. The view is incredible! One can see a full 180 degree panoramic view up to 20 miles. There are a couple of picnic tables here as well, but beware...it can be quite windy up there. In front of the parking area there are several plaques describing a little bit of history and the approximate direction for towns in the distance. Etched into the concrete below your feet is a huge compass, so you can know exactly what direction you are facing. A wonderful and little known vista view. See more..
