    Pincushion Mountain Trail System image
Full disclosure: I'm overweight and have never hiked before in my life. But I did it! It's two miles, including the spur trail, to the summit. You'll hit a flat steep rock to get to the summit, but I had no troubles. Oddly enough, it's mostly downhill until the last .25 mile to the summit, and mostly up hill on the way back. Trails were wide, people were friendly. We will definitely hike this again the next time we are back. See more..

  14. 4.5 Detroit Mountain Recreation Area (24 reviews)
    - A wonderful little overachieving ski area
    Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Detroit Mountain Recreation Area image
My brother and I were on a road trip returning from skiing in Wyoming, and Detroit Mountain was on or way so we decided to stop in for a couple hours. It may not look like much, and physically with a vertical of around 200', it isn't much. But somehow on that silly little nub of a hill, they have set up a really entertaining little ski area. There's some variety of terrain, some imagination in how they cut the trails, they have a double diamond (it's just a drop-in to a slightly steeper run, but I'll give them credit for it), a couple jumps for tricks, and even some opportunities to practice tree skiing. Yes, you have to do everything in short laps, but a lot of people like to practice that way (ever been to a Lifetime Fitness?) If you're expecting The Rockies, you probably shouldn't be looking in the Red River Valley. If you're just looking for a place that does what it does well, check this place out. See more..
  15. 4.0 Mount Ski Gull (23 reviews)

    Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Mount Ski Gull image
My daughter and I went snow tubing while the rest of our family went skiing. There are three different runs. They offer snow tubing at two hour intervals. We were only able to tube for one hour because the 12 to 2 o’clock time slot was filled. The one hour ended up being just perfect for us. The only downside to skiing is that they only have one chair lift. We had beautiful weather. They had fires in a fire pit over by the snow tubing and also near the ski hills by the chalet. See more..
