My favorite park in the north metro, Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park has trails on the east side of the Mississippi River, north and south of the Coon Rapids Dam. My favorite trail is north of the Visitor Center (and the parking areas). The section along the river is asphalt, and the section through the forest is limestone-covered. My usual trip is up one side and down the other. Both the river trail and the forest trail are kept up year-around. The wildlife and plants are marvelous. A real attempt is made to keep this trail as natural as possible. The short loop is about 2 miles, and the longer one is about 3 miles. I visit in every season of the year! See more..

Beautiful walking and biking trails along the Mississippi. We spent two hours walking through the various meadows, tree covered banks, and ponds. There were birds everywhere including a gorgeous Rose-breasted Grosbeak. See more..
  3. 5.0 Lock & Dam 3 (6 reviews)
    - Fun to watch boats go through
    Spent 2-3 hours Dams

This lock and dam has a nice observation platform for watching boats go through the lock. We were lucky enough to see a big steamboat go through the lock. It'd be really fun to see barges or large shipping containers, but we didn't have the right timing. The observation platform is open April through November, dawn to dusk. Employees walk past the observation platform while throwing ropes to the boats. We asked him a few questions and he was very friendly and informative. Looked like some people were fishing in the nearby park area. Overall, a nice free activity for half an hour to an hour. See more..

If you have never been to a lock and dam on the Mississippi River, this is a good one to stop at. We were driving along the Great River Road and saw that a barge just began making it's way through the lock. We stopped to watch the whole process. Very interesting! See more..

This was a great stop as we entered Minnesota. A nice place to see the Mississippi River upclose. Plenty of parking, a visitor center, the active lock and dam, a small museum of sorts, and you can walk right down to the river. See more..
  7. 5.0 Little Falls Dam (1 review)
    - Up Close to The Dam, with Spray on Face
    Dams
    Little Falls Dam image
You can walk up close to the side of the dam and feel the spray on your face as the water thunders through. It's quite powerful and wonderful to see. There are signs that explains some history and workings of the dam. There is a little park-like setting nearby the river and dam which allows you to sit and relax a bit outside the spray zone. It's very easy to get to in town, and parking is easy. See more..
