Rated a Gem “must-see” point of interest by AAA. This kid-friendly museum has a Scavenger Hunt for the young and young at heart! Our most famous artifact is the Kensington Runestone and its mysterious runic message. Was it carved in 1362? Recent laboratory and linguistic analysis of the stone suggests yes! But even as more supporting evidence of its authenticity is revealed, controversy continues to swirl around this internationally renowned artifact. Visit the museum, see the Runestone and learn its story…then decide for yourself. The Runestone Museum also features pioneer displays, a wildlife exhibit, a World War II living room with 1940’s music playing, a children’s discovery area and special limited time exhibits. The museum’s Native American exhibit garnered national attention when our rare 1920s Ojibwe jingle dress appeared in the American Indian Art magazine. There is now a decorated full sized Tipi in the Native American camp diorama. Fort Alexandria is a delightful collection of restored buildings from 1868 to 1910 that includes a furnished township school, pioneer church, log home, and stage stop. The large Annex has many displays, including a 40 foot replica Viking ship and a huge 1906 steam tractor. The third annual History Live! in Fort Alexandria will be Fri. and Sat. June 23 - 24, 2017. Enjoy live historic reenactments from the Fur Trade, Pioneer, and Civil War eras, kid’s activities and family fun. Check the museum website for dates and admission prices. The museum is open year round. See more..

  5. 5.0 Winnebago Area Museum (1 review)
    - History Off The Beaten Path...
Monday: Spent 2-3 hours Military Museums • Natural History Museums • History Museums
I am a traveling Ob/Gyn (drcathylbagleydotcom) who lends support to hospitals in America's rural areas. Stationed in Blue Earth, Minnesota intermittently this year and searching for areas to visit keeping me within a 30 mile radius of the hospital, I stumbled upon the sleepy, but significant town of Winnebago, MN and their marvelously exciting area museum on 9/25/16. It's a storefront museum opened free to the public (accepting monetary donations) occupying much space. Its gallery boasts: Prehistoric Native American artifacts from three tribes occupying the area; a World War II uniforms, notions and stories from the town's citizens; a taxidermy exhibit with a huge grizzly killed with one-shot and the huge fish he was going after and much more! While The Winnebago Area Museum doesn't boast modern computer interactive exhibits, it offers many hands-on stations (the old jail cage that you can literally go in and get locked inside) and it's attendants are accessible, amiable and knowledgeable and eager to walk you through every step of the way. I Ioved this personal touch and human attention! This is a great place for families wanting rescue from hype, gimmicks and such offered by more prominent museums offering a good old-fashioned learning, friendly environment and time to take it in at your own pace. There is a kitchen and public restrooms on the premises. I'm told various items are offered and you can even bring your own bag lunch to eat at long tables provided on the museum's floor. I could go into details; however, it would be best for you to have your own look-see passing through Winnebago on route to Mankato, MN- a sprawling metropolis, I invite you to plan a rest stop at the museum for a taste of history. I invite you to keep American history alive one small town at a time. See more..
