    Basilica of Saint Lawrence image
No matter your religious belief, this is a must see when in Ashville. The architecture and history will amaze you. I am Baptist and felt an enormous sense of awe while there. The "tour guide" was exceptionally knowledgeable. We learned a lot today. It is free, but please leave a donation. They need $15million to repair water damage and leaks. Not an easy task. No one is pressuring you for $ there, but a little tidbit I know. This is history and architecture worth saving. See more..
  30. 4.5 Mingo Falls (1.211 reviews)
    - Great short hike to beautiful falls
    Waterfalls
    Mingo Falls image
This is a wonderful hike especially during the fall. We followed the signs as Apple Maps tried to take us in the back narrow road so the signs pointing us in the better direction on the road was a better option. The hike itself is very short and doable for all ages as long as stairs and walking over roots aren’t an issue. Parking was limited, but plenty of places to park along the side of the road. They also have port-a-potties in the parking area. These falls are absolutely stunning and well worth the short venture up to see them. It was decently crowded on Tuesday at 1pm in October, but not so bad it was uncomfortable. We were able to get plenty of photos and stand on the viewing platform at a safe distance from others. Highly recommend stopping by if passing through. See more..
  31. 4.5 Airlie Gardens (1.122 reviews)
    - Lots of Birds
    Historic Sites
    Airlie Gardens image
I'm a bird watcher. At home I participate in something called Feeder Watch each winter. So this place was for me. I was able to photograph several species I had not seen before. The gardens are large and most of the trails are paved. For our visit, they also were decorated for their Christmas night-time light shows, but tickets - at least for the weekend we were there - were all sold out. As a military retiree me it cost only $5.00 each for not only me, but also my wife. Regular adult admission is $10.00. The only restrooms are at the gift shop/cashier, so beware if you intend to be there for several hours. They are clean. See more..

  33. 4.5 Topsail Island (1.097 reviews)
    - Always Amazing but careful where you book your stay!
    Islands
    Topsail Island image
Excellent place to vacation, we go at least once a year and sometimes more! We’ve always enjoyed our stay in an oceanfront home with our entire family and had a wonderful time. Unfortunately we booked (4346 Island Dr) with Treasure Realty in Sneade’s Ferry and the home was in extremely poor condition and unclean. Treasure Realty and its agents minimized our concerns and did not address the unclean condition of our vacation property during our week’s stay and only offered a discount after we filed a complaint with BBB. We chose to refuse their $200 and reserve the right to review the property. Our view was magnificent but you’ll see from the pictures of the property why we chose to spend the majority of our time outside even after all 9 of us thoroughly cleaned what we were able. We’ll definitely go back but won’t use Treasure Realty or book 4346 Isalnd Dr. See more..

Spent More than 3 hours Beaches
    Wrightsville Beach image
I got here while staying in Wilmington NC on business from NYC. The beach seems like a very popular place among locals and for many good reasons. It’s very well maintained, cleaned, with lifeguards and piers. The weather was beautiful and I sincerely enjoyed the water as well as all the premium multimillion dollar real wastage beachfront homes around here along South Lumina avenue. A great place to surf or stay at the beach with a family. Highly recommend this place! See more..

  38. 4.5 The Bank of America Stadium (1.037 reviews)
    - Jet game
    Arenas & Stadiums
The Bank of America Stadium image
We came to Charlotte for a long weekend for the Jet game. I liked this stadium. Easy walk from most hotels and the streets are closed off for everyone walking. Very organized and quick easy entrance as long as you have the clear bag meeting NFL standards. We sat in the 300 section club level. While no food/drink is included the climate controlled inside was welcome. It was so hot you needed an escape for a little bit. The food choices though were not a huge variety. Basically Bojangles and burgers and other grab and go items. One thing I remarked on when I saw it was the bottomless soda cup for $8.99, it thought it was ridiculous BUT after sweating in 90 degree heat for a quarter I got it ( instead of paying 5 dollars for a bottle of water) and filled it up four times. (You just go and fill it yourself) Think I would have passed out without it. See more..

    - A really good version of the Lost Colony.
    Saturday: Spent 2-3 hours Theaters
    The Lost Colony image
The Lost Colony is a cultural treasure and the best family entertainment on the Outer Banks! The 2023 season runs June 2-Agust 26, Monday - Saturday at 8:00 PM in our Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island. In 1587, 117 English men, women and children came ashore on Roanoke Island to establish a permanent English settlement in the New World. Just three years later in 1590, when English ships returned to bring supplies, they found the island deserted with no sign of the colonists. After nearly 450 years, the mystery of what happened to the colonists remains unsolved. The Lost Colony, is performed each summer on the same site where these actual events occurred. A company of over 100 actors, dancers, singers and technicians create a magical evening for your whole family. This was a really fun stop in Asheville, especially on a stormy afternoon. We arrived at about 1:45pm on a Friday afternoon in July and there were already about 20 people in line. Note they let in 70 people and then you go onto a waiting list. Prior to the opening at 2pm, we were given information and instructions by the owner and then proceeded inside and to pay (there were two lines - one for credit card and one for cash). We then received a wristband and were entitled to free play on nearly all machines. Note you can leave and come back later in the day and you are moved to the top of the wait list which is pretty neat. Admittedly this stop was more on the list for my husband, but I had such a blast too! Playing all the old machines and even the more recent ones were a total blast. Since there is a cap on people allowed we never had to wait for a machine. This was a really well-run experience and one we'd highly recommend! See more..

This waterfall is about a 45 minute drive or so from Asheville. My 7 year old daughter and took a break from the city to go check it out. It's just as beautiful as it was over 10 years ago when I last visited. Absolutely stunning with great volume in a tranquil setting. There's a platform above where those who are disabled, elderly, or very young can enjoy a great view just a short walk away from their vehicle. 2 sets of stairs links the upper viewing platform with the lower. You can also brave the rocks from down there but caution must be exercised. I saw multiple people slip. It was a warm day in early October so there was a pretty good crowd out. Definitely recommend this as an entry level "hike" where the payoff far exceeds the effort. Just be careful as the stairs can be slippery. Some people hiked a little bit downstream but the view doesn't change much unless you're doing photography. See more..
