  2. 4.5 The Lost Colony (942 reviews)
    - A really good version of the Lost Colony.
    Saturday: Spent 2-3 hours Theaters
    The Lost Colony image
The Lost Colony is a cultural treasure and the best family entertainment on the Outer Banks! The 2023 season runs June 2-Agust 26, Monday - Saturday at 8:00 PM in our Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island. In 1587, 117 English men, women and children came ashore on Roanoke Island to establish a permanent English settlement in the New World. Just three years later in 1590, when English ships returned to bring supplies, they found the island deserted with no sign of the colonists. After nearly 450 years, the mystery of what happened to the colonists remains unsolved. The Lost Colony, is performed each summer on the same site where these actual events occurred. A company of over 100 actors, dancers, singers and technicians create a magical evening for your whole family. New music compositions, authentic Native American dances, elegant costume design and more are part of the 86th season of The Lost Colony. Enjoy a night under the stars at Waterside Theatre! The Organizers did a Great job in getting people parked and into the Festival. Traffic was heavy getting into the parking lot but there were several people guiding you to open parking. This was Saturday night so it was Busy!! The lines were long but moved at a steady pace. Once in, you could go in either direction. Kids with families were having a nice time and so did we. It was our first time going so we enjoyed it. The show was good and the performers did a good job. It may be better going during the week since the crowds can become heavy and overwhelming. If you're new to town or need a fun activity for out-of-town guests, check out the Temple Theater. I saw several shows here recently and always look forward to my time here. It is good quality, family entertainment and I found everything to be comfortable. Director Peggy Taphorn is a class act and always says hi to everyone and is so inviting. Make sure to stop by the Chocolate Cellar next door with your ticket (before or after the show), they will give you a sample truffle but you'll be tempted to buy more (and please do support local businesses as you can). 11. 5.0 Don Gibson Theater (79 reviews)
    - Lovin’ the DGT
Saturday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Theaters
    Don Gibson Theater image
The DGT is a awesome place here in Shelby. The performers are typically top notch. Relatively unknown outside of the area artists entertain in the lounge prior to most of the events in the main theater. I have attended many concerts in the theater - each time I have enjoyed the atmosphere of the theater. It’s large enough to support the well know artists and still maintain an affordable ticket price yet at the same time keep the ‘small personal’ venue it is famous for. Top notch artists from a multitude of genres assure you can find someone you’ll enjoy listing to. My only quarrel would be that the local artists playing in the lounge aren’t really promoted much. I do wish the DGT would include the artists playing the lounge in their advertising. Still, I highly recommend the DGT. Go, you won’t regret a second of it! See more..

  22. 4.5 The Historic Earle Theatre (39 reviews)
    - Best kept Secret in Mt. Airy!
    Spent 1-2 hours Theaters
    The Historic Earle Theatre image
Well, we had car trouble and had to stay close to Mount Airy, NC. What to do on a Thursday night? The town - main street - shuts down with the exception of Pandowdy's and the Wine Bar. A really nice Nat'l Park Ranger on the Blue Ridge Pkwy told us that there are free concerts Thursday evenings at the Earle Theater. So, we went. I would travel back to the tiny hick/hillbilly town of Mt. Airy just to sit in the Earle Theatre on a Thursday night. What a delight! Real Appalachian/country music...by real people. Locals gather to play and perform. They were all ages and worked together to back up whoever took the lead on the piece being played. Banjos, base fiddle, fiddle, guitar, drums etc. NO question...hands down... from all 3 of us this was the highlight of our 12 day trip from Philly to Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry to Ashville and exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway. Make time for this experience...it's a jewel in the fabric of American culture! See more..

  24. 5.0 Badin Road Drive In Theater (36 reviews)
    - First time
    Movie Theaters
Badin Road Drive In Theater image
It's my first time at a drive in. As best as I can tell, before the movie comes on, this place seems great. Two screens playing two movies each. Concessions with hamburgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, pizza, wings, fries, etc. and of course popcorn. Want something that's not on the menu? Just drive it in. The rules say keep the alcohol in your car. It doesn't say anything about not drinking it in the car. Some tips: The soundtrack is played over FM radio, so bring a portable radio for maximum enjoyment. (They rent radios if you forget.) How are you gonna see the movie? Through the windshield might not be great. I suggest a truck bed or tailgate or lawn chairs. A blanket on the ground will work in a pinch, but you might be on gravel. Want to kill some time before the sky goes dark and the screen lights up? Bring a disk, cards, or other game and make friends with your neighbors before the movie. See more..

  26. 3.0 AMC Dine-In Holly Springs 9 (34 reviews)

    Movie Theaters
AMC Dine-In Holly Springs 9 image
The layout is nice. For a first time visitor, I felt a little lost as I walked in. The bar to the left was very nice, and it's purpose was clear. There was a line to the right, and another roped off area near some kiosks -- the purpose of all that was not clear. I wasted time in line, after having pre-purchased tickets. Needed the use of the family restroom, but there was only one sign in the lobby pointing down the hall where the ticket-taker should be. Finally went back up front and got better vague directions. We ordered food from our seats. Most was right, but no silverware nor napkins, and had to chase down our server afterwards for a receipt, (he "got slammed"). Will certainly give it another try, but for the cost, was a little disappointed. See more..

  28. 2.5 Ovation Cinema Grill (30 reviews)
    - Expensive food!
    Spent 2-3 hours Movie Theaters
    Ovation Cinema Grill image
We went to see a movie at Ovation Cinema last week. We sat in the second row and found it quite comfortable. The chairs are very nice and the sound level of the movie itself was good. The previews beforehand were extremely loud. The food was average, but very expensive. Between the two of us, we had a hamburger, a chicken sandwich, a beer and a glass of wine and it was over $50. Plus the gratuity is included, which should be clarified when it is not too dark to read the receipt. We went on a Tuesday, because tickets are supposed to be $5 each (actually are $5.34 each). It is recommended that you buy in advance, so we did that and found we also had to pay a $3 fee. The theater, however, is really lovely. We had no problems with the service. See more..

Just a note: the address is. 605 EAST Bluemont for gps users. We got a little lost due to the address being incorrect and missed our movie. We spoke to the ticket person and they called the manager who proceeded to give us the vip treatment. I told him we didn't require that but he insisted and gave us a free drink and popcorn. Theatre Alliance image
I'm moving to the area and wanted to see if there was something similar to the theater I frequent at my current home. Both performances were really excellent. Talented actors and singers with musicians playing live. Only issue is that with the seating resembling how move theater seating used to be, it's easy for an average height person to obscure the view for those sitting behind. Parking lot is smallish and is also used by a popular burger place, so get there early to park. 1st time I had to park fairly far away in a questionably legal spot and hoof it. They said they have purchased a new building in downtown so hopefully the new facility will improve the minor issues I had. See more..

The food is good and very reasonably priced compared to indoor theaters. Younger families should make sure your children get to experience this piece of American Pop Culture while they can.
