Richard Stanhope Pullen founded Pullen Park on March 22, 1887. Once farmland, Mr. Pullen donated the land as a gift to the City of Raleigh to be used as parkland. He characterized it as on old cow pasture, red and rocky. He intended this land to be used for the recreation use and pleasure of the inhabitants and the visitors to the City of Raleigh. Through his visions, Pullen Park became the first public park in North Carolina.See more..
5.0Kersey Valley Zip Line(1.152 reviews) - The best experience! Saturday: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks
What could have turned out not so happy, was turned into a wonderful experience! We were not completely informed about the escape room situation when we called the day before. Unfortunately due to covid restrictions only one group that comes together can go into room at one time-we understood but we’re not given information the day before. Rather than not allowing us to participate-which was the only reason why we drove here- the staff called in an employee and happily set us up in the autopsy room. Pam was cheerful and helpful and so kind to our family when she worked with us. She came in during her time off to make sure we had a great experience!!See more..
5.0Fort Macon State Park(1.069 reviews) - A very pleasant stroll through the park Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM State Parks
If you have one or two hours you should visit this state park. We happened to meet a very nice staff (could be a volunteer) dressed up in the old uniform and carry the old riffle doing the demonstration of how the riffle & bayonet worked. He also explained what the symbol of different buckles on the uniform stands for. We went on a short trail to a gazebo through the wooden walkway. It was a nice view of Beaufort and etc...See more..

4.5Pilot Mountain State Park(764 reviews) - Great views. Go on weekends to avoid crowds Saturday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM State Parks • Mountains
Great experience and doesn’t take too long to see. Only need a couple of hours to see everything and very convenient to US 52 highway. You could tell there has been a fire but the views are still beautiful and everything is open. This includes a brand new and spacious visitors center at the base. You can drive up to the top of Little Pinnacle, which is next to the top of the Big Pinnacle on weekdays. On weekends there is usually a shuttle to the top (March-Nov) but check website to make sure. To avoid the crowds go on a weekday or go early on weekends. Went here on a sunny Friday in early April and it wasn’t crowded at all. Once at the top, there are spectacular views of the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you have 30 minutes, make sure to take the .8 mile Jamokee trail loop, which walks from Little Pinnacle to the Big Pinnacle. This trail has spectacular views of Hanging Rock and Flat Mountains to the East.See more..

Came because others said their kids enjoyed it. Yes, so did our grandkids. Places is geared more for ages 5-15. Now for the other stuff. For what you pay one would figure that this place would be on par with Disney. Very clean, up to date, well maintained, very polite, cheerful greetings. So the bedrooms- no paperwork with info in room, 1king, 2 queens and one double soft bed, 1 small table and two chairs, 1 bath with shower and 1 with deep tub, small kitchen with small micro, small refrigerator, 1 coffee pot with provided slide pods and a sink. 3 TVs. For a view ask for room on front with balcony. A/c/heat very loud in king bed room. Room service was ok but did minimal service. I would compare the room to a days inn good but not a Hampton. Food is expensive so bring it go to the Walmart grocery nearby or eat at Cracker Barrel nearby. You can bring a cooler to stock food. Bottom line- grandkids enjoyed itSee more..

With Covid implementations in place the park rangers have a station set up outside of the museums for a map of the driving/walking tour and to answer questions. The museum is open but limited for interactive exhibits and no movie in the theater. The gift shop is also closed. That said, the tour itself was pretty remarkable. Knowing you are walking in the footsteps in history was awe inspiring. There isn't too much in terms of buildings or fortifications but the markers at each stop help tell the story.See more..

4.5Dan Nicholas Park(344 reviews) - Good camping experience especially for kids. Amusement & Theme Parks
This park is amazing. Great for bicyclers & camping. The campground is hidden under trees near the lake. There are 2 bath houses with ac. The campsites are spread out but close. Most sites are fairly level with water & electric & wifi. & a dump station is available. The checkout is early at 11am & refunds are not provided with a cancelation, but a rain check can be used later. The splash park , train ride & petting zoo/animals are great for smaller kids. The lake is good for fishing & paddle boats. A water park or pool would be a good vision for the county to consider. Need to trim back a few low branches for the tall campers Overall we liked the campground & amenities. & will be back again.See more..
4.5Fred G. Bond Metro Park(293 reviews) - In-town park with great trails, fields, ball fields, places for dogs Saturday: 7:00 AM - 9:00 PM Parks
I have been going to Fred Bond since my children were in their early teens (they're in their 40's now). Using the parcourse trail, walking our dog the 2 miles around the lake and through the wooded trails. Watching the eagle fish at the far end of the lake, and the kids fish from the dam. For an in-town park, surrounding by homes in the middle of Cary, it is a great place to go.See more..

I’ve done the Cole Mill Loop and the Pump Station Loop, both were great hikes. Easy and well maintained. 4.5Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park(223 reviews) - Amazing, free stopping point not far off I-95!! Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Parks
I love this place! Try to visit on a windy day so that you can see all the Whirligigs in action. The amount of time you spend is completely up to your schedule. We grabbed lunch from a food truck and wandered for a couple of hours enjoying the ingenuity of the creator, Vollis Simpson. The park and small museum are a testimony to a town's tribute to his genius. The small museum tells the story of his life and his motivation behind creating these fascinating works of art.See more..
We stayed at morrow mountain campground for 5 days during a holiday weekend. Loop C is the best if you have a camper. The inner loop has electric and water. We stayed in loop B. There were mostly tent camping there. The site we had was very uneven for a camper. We called and emailed to make sure we could fit and when we arrived it was a nightmare setting up. They have showers that were clean and good water pressure. We did a few hikes and went to the lake a couple of times. You can rent kayaks or canoes, have a picnic or go fishing at the lake. It was very loud in the campground with dogs barking in the middle of the night. Once everyone left on Sunday. We spent Monday and Tuesday in a peaceful and quiet space. It was great!See more..
My wife and I visited on a Friday looking for a casual stroll through the woods. We found an easy trail heading out toward a little lake. Beautiful trail around the lake. It's about 4.5 miles. The last part of the west side has signs which depict each type of tree. Wonderful hiking!See more..

We spent a lovely day kayaking on the lake. I like seeing nature, having some peace and quiet, and getting some exercise, so at first I was a little disconcerted by the large number of jet skis. Loud and gassy-smelling! But if you go past the swim beach to the right, eventually you get to a large area that is shallow and full of stumps—no good at all for gas-powered boats. It was quiet and beautiful, with lots of interesting bird life. We watched ospreys fishing, and there were herons, egrets and woodpeckers everywhere. Just lovely, and so much better than expected. We usually go to Beaverdam Lake (no power boats at all) but were ready to try something different. There’s a nice swim beach with lots of sand. We went for a cool-off swim after kayaking, and though the water was quite warm, it still felt good. There are two bath houses with changing rooms, and picnic spaces. It seems well run. We are planning on going back to explore more.See more..

Family friendly park, lovely welcoming at visitors center. Trail was marked well. Can be tricky in the wrong shoes. Scenic view of the river. Campground seems good. We do not camp but it seemed fine. Bathroom available. Get there early, we arrived at 930am and left at noon. We saw a line of cars attempting to get in. I feel like many were disappointed.See more..

5.0Triad Park(137 reviews) - Beautiful and convenient park Spent 2-3 hours Parks
This is a lovely jointly owned park of 426 acres, part located in Forsyth and some located in Guilford. It is pleasing and has a wide array of attractions. Two improvements recommended: maps need to be more accessible, and more trails need to be built in the woods; they have several beautiful ones but there is plenty of room and terrain for more ... there have been no new ones for years, and the current ones are very busy; woodland trails are a low intensity use and cause minimal interference with the environment.See more..

I had no idea this park existed until recently. I did a trail run on the Lakeshore Trail. It was a cold Saturday morning, so traffic on the trail was limited. The loop is 6.3 if you include all the spurs. Great lake views. Lots of roots. Bikes not allowed on Lakeshore, but there are 30 miles of bike trails in the north section (check to make sure they’re open if there’s been any recent rain). Honestly I’d like to come back and hike to enjoy the views that you don’t get to see while running. There is a good visitor center on the north side of the park with snacks and souvenirs. See more..

5.0Carolina Ziplines(101 reviews) - An Afternoon of Family Fun Saturday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks
My wife, my sisters, my brother in law, and I were in the area to attend a wedding. We had an afternoon to fill the day before the wedding so we booked a zipline tour with Carolina Canopy Tours. My wife and I had previous experience, but the rest of the family were first-timers. Keith and Bailey provided us with sturdy harnesses, plyable gloves, a bottle of cold water and helmuts for our adventure. Both Keith and Bailey were very knowledgeable, providing clear instruction so that our experience would be safe, memorable fun. Keith is a wisecracker and very humorous. The zipline layout was located in beautiful trees and hills. There was a variety of distances and heights, so that each zipline provided a fun experience that built up confidence for the next usually longer and higher zipline. Both Bailey and Keith provided guiding, ancedotes, and special attention to safety while we all had great fun . All of our family had a fine time and hope to return again. Well done Keith and Bailey!See more..

We went up here for a weekend and went on the trails with our 4x4s. The trails were great and well-maintained. Some were hard, some were easy. Some marked easy were actually difficult. The maps we had were not that great for the trails. This was the first off roading experience we had in a National Forest. We went down many of the off roading trails. We found campgrounds, picnic areas, people fishing, groups of jeeps. We even found some people who gave us a better map to use for the trails. Friendly folks on these trails. We all just wanted to have fun. We parked at the Badin Lake area and had our picnic. We used the facilities there and they were what you would expect for a forest. Some bugs. We used the grill to cook the hamburgers and hot dogs on and it worked perfectly. No issues. Afterwards we took several photos of the lake and surrounding area. It was a ton of fun going here to Uwharrie and I am sure we will be back for more fun and trails in the future!See more..
