A very pleasant stroll through the park

If you have one or two hours you should visit this state park. We happened to meet a very nice staff (could be a volunteer) dressed up in the old uniform and carry the old riffle doing the demonstration of how the riffle & bayonet worked. He also explained what the symbol of different buckles on the uniform stands for. We went on a short trail to a gazebo through the wooden walkway. It was a nice view of Beaufort and etc...

Nice Family Time at Fort Macon State Park Beach
Fort Macon State Park Beach - is a great little place, where we stopped so that the kids could have a standing lifeguard present on the beach. The parking is free, there is a concession stand and bathrooms. We were staying in Emerald Isle, where there are only patrolling lifeguards and it was just a 20- 30 minute drive. It was worth the drive, as we arrived in town after a storm, the storm surge created large waves, and the water was rough. EI is also known to have areas of rip tides. The water was very murky, but again that was due to the recent storm that passed through. We did not go over to look at the fort, but you can do this for free as well, so I can’ t report on the rest of the park. We spent an easy 2 hours where our 12 year old boys played in the surf. They did eat the burgers from the concession stand, and loved them.

    Surrounded by history
I visited for the fort rather than the park and found it fascinating. The site presents an authentic look at the coastal defenses of our history. Fort Macon played an important role in the control of a vital part of North Carolina during the Civil War as it was seized by Confederates in 1861 then taken back by the Union a year later. Also, like many coastal forts, it was updated for defensive use in later conflicts. The structure of the fort today is intact and authentic cannons are strategically placed on the grounds. Many of the vaulted rooms are set up to show the progression of the fort’s history and the lives of men who served there. This is a free site and the visitors center has nice rest rooms and a gift shop. Don’t miss it if you are visiting this part of the NC coast.
