Last week I did Wildland's Fall Colors in the Smokies with their guide Francisco. It was a beautiful trip. I traveled solo and it's a roll of the dice who your fellow travelers will be, but we had a great group. The weather was unseasonably cold and the first night temps went down to 9 with the wind chill. Francisco is so experienced (Triple Crown Hiker), I felt completely safe in every way. I was really impressed how keenly aware he was of where everyone was at, physically and mentally, and how he kept everyone relaxed and entertained while he did basically all of the work, catering for 7 people single-handedly. It's a special person that can deal with all of that. I used a combo of my gear and theirs which was fine. Food was delish. And the Smokies are complete heaven. Do the training. I didn't have time to do all of it, but was so jazzed to be there it didn't matter. See more..
