    We were driving past and saw 2 "redcoats" on the lawn. Had to stop and visit with them. They were members of the 23rd Royal Welch Fusiliers reenactment group, and were on hand to add color to the start of historic Hillsborough tours at the visitor center. We did not have time for a tour that day, but enjoyed talking with the very knowledgeable pair. They even let us try on their coats! See more..

    Falls Lake Dam was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and a reservoir for drinking water. There are also a number of trails and recreation opportunities at the dam. The trailrace area is right below the dam and is very scenic. It provides access to the Neuse River Trail heading downstream on the river and the 60-mile Falls Lake Trail that runs along the south shore of the lake. Additional short hike options are found around the dam area. The visitor center has more information for those interested in learning about engineering and construction of the lake. There are many spots for beautiful views of the lake, especially in the fall. I visit here regularly to hike the trails. See more..

    Normally, a stop at a visitors center might not seem too exciting. But for travelers with a dog and/or kids, this one is a god send. This visitors center is just off I-95 and has a DOG RUN! And within walking distance there is a Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks & gas station! Fido can stretch his legs, kids can get their Chick-fil-As, parents can get a Starbucks fix, and the car can get gassed up all in one stop.
