We managed to arrive just before the start of a guided tour so we opted to spend the extra money to have a well versed volunteer with a small group. I highly recommend this option as the mansion is more about the history of the mansion, surrounding area and family facts rather than the contents of the home. Our guide was able to gain access to spots that general admission does not allow. We watched many folks meandering around without really knowing what they were seeing. Our experience was much more detailed and provided good insights and information. The Mansion has very little in the way of furnishings so without the extra docent led tour highlights it is not much of an experience. There are a few actual original pieces but most items inside are reproductions or acquired from other locations. See more..

The State Capitol building, built in 1840, is an excellent example of a civic structure in Greek Revival-style architecture. Though recently renovated, the building does contain some original furniture. See more..

I have not been to this place in many years. It is such a shame t has fallen on such disrepair. When he Penn's owned the property, Mr. Penn bought, disassembled and rebuilt a windmill from Holland. The Penn's hired my Grandfather to do some work on the windmill. I understand the Penn's held parties inside the windmill. The windmill burned down but the footprint and fireplace were still there. When I was a child, my Dad drove us to the plantation. The caretaker, a Mr. Talley knew my Grandfather. The Penn's were travelling overseas and Mr. Talley let us come through the gates and let us go all over the grounds. It was magical. When I visited years later, there was disrepair and the windmill area is in the pasture area of the farm, but it was still beautiful. I am so sad that this place is no longer an attraction. Year 1980's See more..

Where else can you leave your car for 30 days free of charge when traveling on Amtrak? Nowhere ! The depot is well patrolled and no loitering is allowed. This has to be one of Amtrak's best stations. It also has a nice snack bar...albeit a little pricey. See more..

Shuford House & Gardens is a charming community house in the Oakwood district, built in 1904, now adjacent to other historic structures and a small public park with gardens, tranquil walking paths, peaceful fountain, white pergola. The park is free to visit; tours of the house are available by appointment. Both can be rented for weddings, birthdays, showers, meetings & other special occasions. See more..
  6. 4.5 Alamance County’s Historic Courthouse (2 reviews)
    - Living, breathing history...
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
This old 1920's era courthouse, complete with a soldier statue and encircled by Main St., is a thing of beauty and history. As Alamance County, NC grew and grew (now up to around 160K), this old building became too small for many of the civic responsibilities it housed. First, an Annex was built down the next block --- and then later, a new Courthouse was erected close by... leaving the old historic Courthouse to be used for less things. Regardless, it is a beautiful and historically important part of Alamance County's heritage. Being in the center of old downtown Graham, and literally having Main Street circle around it... you see this splendid old structure on any trip into the town! See more..
