In the basement the visitor may see a short film with the history of the sephardite jews as well as several cult objects, many of the centuries old. There are audio guides and a well done flyer. 4.5Sint-Bavokerk (Church of St. Bavo)(1.115 reviews) - Simply breathtaking candlelight service Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
We visited St Bavo’s for the Easter Vigil service and the whole experience was just amazing. The church was candlelit and the atmosphere was just so peaceful and holy feeling. The service was in Dutch but that hardly mattered as it was so beautiful and the choir with the amazing acoustics made the whole experience just magical. We also visited the church in the daytime later in the week for the official tour as well so we got to experience it in a different way but it couldn’t top the candlelight service experience we had. One downside was that the organ was under construction so we didn’t get to view the massive organ. Also, weirdly, there was a carnival set up outside for kings day celebration for a week so getting pics of the outside is the church was difficult as it had carnival rides in the way! But visiting here for the Easter service was one of the highlights of our trip.See more..
Fascinating educational tour of this historic windmill and of windmills’ role in Dutch history and development. We were the only ones on our tour, and our volunteer guide was incredibly knowledgeable, demonstrating using small models how different types of windmills worked and how they were reworked depending on what needed to be milled. It was awesome to see the huge sails and to learn about how the miller had to climb them to set the sails to catch the wind, and how the sail positions were used as messaging for the miller and community. Very worthwhile, especially for only 7.5 Euros each!See more..

4.0Hof Van Sonoy(37 reviews) - Nice place for a cup of coffee. Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Religious Sites
The court predates 1572 and was a monastery. In that year it housed townspeople made homeless due construction of new city defenses against the Spanish. Later it was used as home for the elderly. It currently houses a restaurant with the same name. Anyway, we sat outside in the court yard and had a cup of coffee, while admiring the looks of this obviously very old place. It's surprisingly quiet for its location in the heart of the old city.See more..

The restaurant/cafe was unfortunately closed at the hour that I was there, but I really enjoyed the building. The "Accijnstoren" (Accijns = tax, excise) is where merchants, in the old days, paid their taxes on goods brought into a city, in this case by ship. All goods had to be offloaded at this point. Towers like this were once very prevalent. This one dates back to 1622. It's interesting that the whole tower was moved 12 feet (4 meters) in 1924 to widen the street it's on (Bierkade). It really makes a nice picture. You can go inside. We didn't though.See more..

I visited this little museum with my boyfriend almost spontaneously and we both really enjoyed our time there! We are interested in air force and history so for us it was a great find and we for sure will visit it again. The museum has a good collection of the air force and World War II related items. There is a separate room where you can watch a movie about the air force in World War II and about the history and daily work of the museum itself. Also there is a morse code machine which the visitors are welcome to try out. 4.0Cimitero Ebraico Beth Haim(17 reviews) - An amazing tour. Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Cemeteries • Religious Sites
This is *not* a show-up-and-walk-around place, please do not go there without letting them know you're coming. My wife arranged (weeks before) to see if she could find the graves of some ancestors, and we were met at the gate. The tour we were given was above and beyond any possible expectation. The history of this place, and these people, is captivating. If you have any interest in the history of the Portuguese Jews, consider contacting Beth Haim for a visit (also consider a donation to help with its upkeep).See more..
4.0Vlietermonument(16 reviews) - Worthy of Stopping to Honour a Great Man Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Observation Decks & Towers • Monuments & Statues
This impressive statue of Cornelis Lely, a Dutch Politician and Engineer who was the brains trust for the Afsluitdijk, spent years (from around 1886) trying to convince the Dutch parliament that the works were needed to prevent flooding. His plans were only approved in 1916 after a major flood occured in the Zuiderzee. The statue was sculpted by Marie Andriessen and dedicated on 23 September 1954, the 100th anniversary of of his birth (23 September 1854). It was great to stop and appreciate the work and effort that Cornelis Lely put into the development and the project managing of the very impressive dyke. Unfortunately, he died in 1929, three years before the construction was complete.See more..
4.0Panser fort IJmuiden(16 reviews) - Rondleiding Forteiland. Historic Sites • Military Bases & Facilities
See more..

A really croocked building. The inside is small but historical. The information is interesting, the old floors and cells are well preserved.. It's sometimes a bit creepy, and croocked. When you turn to fast in a cell you can get seasick of it. But it's amazing to see, would really recommend visiting this when you can. Entry fee is really cheap, a bit to cheap I would say... would pay more for it.See more..
4.0Stadhuis van Enkhuizen uit 1688(14 reviews) - Candide et Constanter (Honest and Steadfast) Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
Square building that looks a bit like a smaller version of the palace on Dam square in Amsterdam. Vellekoop, the architect was the son of a partner of the famous Jacob van Kampen. One can tell that it is from a period -late 17th century- when the heydays of Enkhuizen are over (only the facade is nicely ornamented). Still, a monumental building worth having a look at.See more..
This fort isn’t very well publicised but is worth a stop if you are in the area. The entrance is off Schansweg, where there is a small parking area and an information board ( in Dutch, German and English). The fort is free to visit during daylight hours. There is not much to see; a few brick entrances, the outline of the walls and a cannon, but there are good views over the countryside. We spent about 30 minutes there in total.See more..

This is the one and only paper mill that works on wind power. It run by volunteer. It was very interesting to see the paper making proces, from the cotton fabrics to paper. Entrance fee is € 5,00. You got a brochure which is to my opinion the best brochure we've ever got. All the information and the map are there and we could follow the route by ourselves. Later there was a short demonstration how to make a piece of paper from the water full of cotton fiber pulp. It was such a unique experience visiting this windmill.See more..
See more..

4.0Trompenburgh(10 reviews) - Extraordinary Manor House Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas
Trompenburgh is a 17th-century summer residence of Admiral Cornelis Tromp, one of the naval heroes of the Dutch Republic in 's-Graveland. It is a special building from the Golden Age because of the construction and it was built from wood on bricks. The house with an octagonal dome at the back side has great historical value because as well the ceiling as the interior was painted beautifully. And this octagonal room is the most beautiful part of the house. The weathervane was gilded. We came here during the open monument day in september. After this day, it would be closed for a couple years for renovation.See more..
