4.5Cathedral of Saint Bavo(363 reviews) - Beautiful! DO NOT MISS! Wednesday: 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Bavo (New Bavo) was designed by J.Th. Cuypers and built in the period from 1895 to 1930. The Cathedral Basilica is based on the classic form of a three-aisled basilica with chapels along the aisles and chapels along the choir. Because construction took a lot of time and a period of lack of funds in the diocese building temporarily brought, Cuypers was given the opportunity to present his designs several adjustments during construction and perform. The building therefore has an eclectic style, mainly neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic elements alongside Moorish and Assyrian ornament shapes and influences of Art Nouveau and the architect H. P. Berlage. Recently artworks of Jan Dibbets, Gijs Frieling and Marc Mulders were added to the interior. Without doubt a very special building. Activities at this monument: KathedraalMuseum, Willibrord Organ plus periodically vault tours and climbing the towers.See more..
4.5Grote Kerk(96 reviews) - Must see Churches & Cathedrals
Check the cannon balls stuck in the church before you go inside. The interior is highly decorated. In the center of the church you will find mirrors that you can hold to see the wonderful art work on the ceiling. Keeps you from getting cramps in the neck. Highly recommend.See more..
It's very obviously why the church is called the Ruin Church. It is a ruin but there is also a church in the middle of it and the area is surrounded by a wall. The church's door was closed. The area was used for the event '10 Days Art'. This church is located in the town centre. Saturday is the market day and the stalls are around the ruin wall. It's quite nice to see and it's illuminated in the night.See more..
At this point in my life I've seen a lot of enormous European churches...this one ranks in the bottom quartile. The exterior isn't anything shocking, and the interior isn't rich and fancy like the the others I've seen. There are some nice stained glass windows, and the wooden roof is still holding up. It a small town that probably doesn't have a lot of money to support major renovations. But the staff is friendly, and a kind older Dutch gentleman gave us a big welcome spent a few minutes giving us the history of this church...he did his best with his limited English, but was very enthusiastic in talking with us apathetic Americans. I donated a couple €, and used the WC as this is the only public WC in Edam. Otherwise its free and worth a brief peek if you're in the area.See more..
We reached the church by bike from the natural park. The white tower is a great contrast with the green of fields and the blue of sky. I loved the photos with the church on background.See more..
4.0Sint- Vituskerk(28 reviews) - Beautiful church with passionate staff Churches & Cathedrals
We went on 'monument day' in the Netherlands and a kind man told us a whole lot about the history of the church and the houses around it. They sometimes have special concerts on the organ during weekdays. See more..
4.5Zuiderkerk(27 reviews) - From the early 1400s Churches & Cathedrals
They started construction work in 1422! Imagine the foundation had to be made in swampy terrain. The walls of the church are as high as the foundation walls were deep. Completed in 1458. The tower was ready seven decades later. From a present-day perspective it is astonishing to see how people were motivated to build such a huge church, as soon as they had more resources than necessary to survive at a minimal subsistence level. Early 1400s Holland was poor and still they built a structure that lasts till today.See more..
4.0Koepelkerk(26 reviews) - Beautiful Painting on the Wall Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
We visited Hoorn for a concert. We had a chance to go around in the town centre before the concert. This church is not far from the town square. The door was open so we went inside and took a minute silence. There is a corner where you can burn a candle and pray and was very serene. The painting on the wall is beautiful. Other part of the church is closed when there is no services.See more..

4.5Westerkerk(23 reviews) - Gothic style church with exceptional wooden tower Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Completed in 1540, but extensions and changes were made during subsequent ages. Striking is the wooden tower standing alone next to the main building from 1519 (currently under repair). It took some 70 years to build the church. Younger than the nearby Zuiderkerk, but more spacious. Interesting to hear the floor of the church contains more than 1500 tombstones.See more..

4.0Johanneskerk uit 1521(13 reviews) - Church for Event Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
The church building of 1521 is old but inside, the seats are modern. Probably only the carillon, the statue on the wall and the pulpit are old. Someone in the church told us about the date of the building. The dedication date of the church is accurately known, as it is stated on the beam in the triumphal arch, now directly above the pulpit. There it says: “Dies Lambertus 1521”.“Consecrated on Saint Lambert 1521” and also known who the builder was, Mr Lubbertus, a local builder. The summer concert agenda booklet is ready in the church.See more..
Named after Bonifatius, a fundamentalist Christian missionary who lived in the 8th century, the church is the center of the Protestant community in Medemblik. Though the tower dates from the 1350s, it looks newer probably because of restoration/reconstruction work at the end of the 19th century. A colossal building in what is now a small city that once used to be a significant harbour on the Zuiderzee.See more..
4.0Kapelkerk(13 reviews) - nice little church, rebuilt after been burnt down Wednesday: Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
This church cannot stand in the shadow of the big church in the very center of Alkmaar, but it is a nice church to visit. The inside is very white, with very little stained glass windows (only part of the bigger windows is decorated). Interior decoration is all done very low key. The outside is simple, straight lines. Interesting is the white layering in the bricks of the building.See more..

See more..

4.0Protestant Church(10 reviews) - ...Centuries old Churches & Cathedrals
Chronologically: 1415 is the year of the construction of this church, which was the most important place of worship for Texel fishermen (De Koog was a fishing village at that time). During the 80’s years war, 16 th century and after the storm the church was destructed. The year 1719 is engraved in the wall of this church as this is probably when the renovation of it took place. Nowadays, this Church is very much well taken care of and worth the admiration as well as a visit if you are lucky to be in the time frame when it’s open as we were less lucky. See more..

See more..
A Dutch Reformed Church in the village of De Rijp in the municipality of Graft-De Rijp, North Holland province. This late-Gothic church is where the Christian worship and other religious meetings are held. A church is also called House of prayer, prayer house, God's house or temple. This was built in the period 1538 to 1529. The village fire of 1654 engulfed the Church largely in flames. The Church was thereafter rebuilt. Many prominent donors made this church interior awesome like the stained glass windows, the pulpit, the baptism garden, the organ and the ship model hanged up high. Next to the church is the statue of the 17th-century sailor Jan Janszoon Weltevree (in Korea Pak Yon) from De Rij. He was in Korea was captured and brought to the Advisor of the emperor. A copy of this statue is in Seoul (South Korea).See more..

A small church that is open for tourists every 3th Sunday of the month. It is free entry where people who renovated the church tell enthusiastic of it's history. The town used to be connected to the sea on the east side. This connection to the sea made the little town into a town of fishermen, shipbuilders and whalers. While the connection to the sea and all the trade it brought has long been lost, the influence it had can still be seen in small details of the church decoration.See more..

3.5Katholieke Kerk St. Agnes Egmond Aan Zee(5 reviews) - Old Catholic place of worship in predominant Protestant North Holland Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Considering there was already a (Dutch reformed) church in the tiny village of fishermen and their families, this is a rather big alternative church. Even nowadays the village of Egmond aan Zee has just over 5000 inhabitants. The church was built in 1865 with support of the government, whose (new) policy was to ensure people of different religions were treated equal by the secular state (even when living in a predominant Protestant region). Remarkable as well is the denomination of the church: Old Catholic. These are catholics who do not recognize certain dogmas of the Roman Catholic church such as the infallibility of the pope of Rome. There was an earlier church also dedicated to Agnes which disappeared into the sea after a flood. Agnes was a saint who -according to legend- lived during the third century and as a 13 year-old was raped (eventually killed because she declared not to get married to another man).See more..
4.5Dorpskerk Twist/theaterkerk Hemels(4 reviews) - Now a theater in picturesque Twisk Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
Perhaps a good example of what to do with historic buildings. Since 2017 the church is not longer a religious place of worship, but a theater and a space where events take place. The new owners live there and also run a B&B at their place. The former church is still an eyecatcher in the picturesque village of Twisk. The historic farmhouses along the main road 'dorpsweg' are another wonderful attraction.See more..
