Zuiderkerk, North Holland Province, The Netherlands

4.5 (27 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Enkhuizen Churches & Cathedrals

From the early 1400s

They started construction work in 1422! Imagine the foundation had to be made in swampy terrain. The walls of the church are as high as the foundation walls were deep. Completed in 1458. The tower was ready seven decades later. From a present-day perspective it is astonishing to see how people were motivated to build such a huge church, as soon as they had more resources than necessary to survive at a minimal subsistence level. Early 1400s Holland was poor and still they built a structure that lasts till today.

    Interesting place
Fascinating old church. The library upstairs was quite remarkable, especially being able to handle the books. Bought slates for the new roof. Tombstones on the floor. Wonderfully refurbished organ pipes

    Beautiful old church
This is a beautiful old church in Enkhuizen. As with many old churches, the floor consists of old gravestones which are so full of history, you can't help but be fascinated as you wander around.
