Fifty years ago this market place was active with cows etc every Tuesday. Things have changed and such open animal markets are no longer allowed. The Market place has kept remnants of the old stalls, built some bronze cattle statues and remains surrounded by the old cafes. A great place to visit See more..

    Waddeneiland Texel image

Seeing this national monument 'Torenfort' from outside was very interesting as it's still intact. But when you have a chance to get inside the building, that was really cool. It was open and we could get around inside. There are all kind of clubs such as Creative group of Weesp, music club, ceramic, studio etc. See more..
  8. 3.5 Rijksmonument Fort de Schans Oudeschild Texel uit 1574 (14 reviews)
    - Interesting place for a wander
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas • Castles
Rijksmonument Fort de Schans Oudeschild Texel uit 1574 image
This fort isn’t very well publicised but is worth a stop if you are in the area. The entrance is off Schansweg, where there is a small parking area and an information board ( in Dutch, German and English). The fort is free to visit during daylight hours. There is not much to see; a few brick entrances, the outline of the walls and a cannon, but there are good views over the countryside. We spent about 30 minutes there in total. See more..

  10. 4.0 Trompenburgh (10 reviews)
    - Extraordinary Manor House
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas
    Trompenburgh image
Trompenburgh is a 17th-century summer residence of Admiral Cornelis Tromp, one of the naval heroes of the Dutch Republic in 's-Graveland. It is a special building from the Golden Age because of the construction and it was built from wood on bricks. The house with an octagonal dome at the back side has great historical value because as well the ceiling as the interior was painted beautifully. And this octagonal room is the most beautiful part of the house. The weathervane was gilded. We came here during the open monument day in september. After this day, it would be closed for a couple years for renovation. See more..

    - Part of your Spaarndam itinerary
Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas • Monuments & Statues
Standbeeld Hans Brinker IJdijk Spaarndam image
I live locally and almost take this for granted but this statue of the boy with his finger in the dyke represents the struggle against water which is part of everyday life in this polder village. This is a great stop on a good walk around the village, do take in the Stompe Toren, de Oude Kerk as well. In fact, there is a lot of history to explore in this old village. The status is in a picturesque spot and around the corner on the little harbour there are two nice places for eating and drinking: Restaurant de Kolk and Cafe Spaarndam. See more..

The Kolksluis in Spaarndam is a beautiful piece of history, showing what the town of Hanje Brinker (the boy who put his ginger in the dyke to safe it from flooding) must have looked like in the 16th and 17th century. Worth a visit and to relax. See more..

Middenbeemster is a small village in the North of the Netherlands. It is a World Heritage Site. We started by the visitor centre, got some information about the village and also a small free map. To explore the village, you can begin behind the visitor centre. Made a stop at the places with information board near the site self. There are a lot of historical monuments in the whole village such as the church, smithy, an old bridge, one of the "Stelling van Amsterdam" ( Amsterdam Defence line) that had a very important roll during the WW2 and many others. Visiting this area is recommended when you're in the neighbourhood See more..
